I personally have not had any problems with the 4 WD external drives I´ve owned but I hear they have included some some crappy backup software in a non-user accessible partition that cant be erased on the new drives. Maybe you could find one of the "old" WD drives or a Seagate drive. |

Two External HDs
I backup all my data files onto two external HDs and keep a recent image of my OS, Vista (spit, spit) on one of the externals.
I use SyncBack to do the differential backups. Offsite, I encrypt my most important files and store them on AWS, Amazon's Simple Storage services - less than $1/month. When I have the time and money, I will backup to a Drobro and keep an external HD at my parents' place. I have two external backups of my Mac (music, video) as well. No offsite - have to figure a way to do that. Buy yet another HD probably. |

dgm, I just have to say...
I can seriously say, I haven't seen that one. Is that a spin-off from Progressive Farmer? I subscribed to that for a while in the 80's, then MoEarNews, lastly Backwoods Home. They talk a bit about politics in each issue, so I guess that section would be considered a separate subscription to "Crap Monthly". Oh, and I did read several issues of Water Conditioning and Purification Magazine (dealing with Filtration and Separation, chemical treatement, etc.), and, IIFC, the International Journal of Sedimentation Research, and some industry journal on turbidity. None of this has anything to do with backing up, unless you count what you REALLY want to do if you wind up treading on a broken cover over a septic tank. I'm all for the USB drives (for the about and type of stuff I do) but I really like the NAS idea to put all bulk data in a common location that I can reach from just about anywhere... oh, and a raided file system based on compact flash (or even USB) drives. Hah... listen to me, sounding like I know something. A few UTube videos and I sound like a rocket scientist. |

One real benefit of NAS, which I didn't know about when I bought mine, is the ability to use a NAS box as a media server to stream music, video, etc, all over the house. Make sure that your NAS box is "DLNA certified" (DLNA is the standard for media streaming) and it's all seamless. |

Okay, so I've had my laptop back for about a week now. Here's what I'm doing.
The 'puter guy put my harddrive in a case. Then he put a new hard drive in the laptop, and re-installed Vista and drivers, etc with the provided disks. THEN he plugged into the old hard drive, and copied my old desktop folders, and my documents. Brought the laptop and old hard drive back, and told me to play with laptop for a while, and to see if there is anything that he missed that I just had to have. (And to keep my hands off the old harddrive.......) The first thing I did was install Carbonite, using the cust50 code to get one year for $27.95. (IGood until the end of December!) Took about 24 hrs to completely back everything up, and seems to be working seamlessly. It was a fast, simple download, even for someone who's a scaredy-cat of new things, and I did it all by myself! I noticed the Calibre library was there, as was the Calibre icon, but it was empty. A simple step to reinstall Calibre, which synced with the library, and voila! All books safe and sound. All pictures and documents recovered. ('whew!) Had to reinstall a few programs, but nothing serious. (Thanks Leep!) Now, he's coming back this week sometime, I'll tell him everything is okay, and he'll wipe my old hard drive. Then we'll download this program, http://www.handybackup.com/ which is what he recommended, and will show me how to set it up......and I"ll have both onine and onsite back up programs. This may not be the ideal solution for everyone, but its working for me. I may screw up things in the future, but I'll be able to recover the important stuff. God willin' and the creek don't rise........... ![]() Oh.....and I found out his favorite kinds of candy, and there's a box waiting here for him.... ![]() I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for all the good suggestions. While I was going back and forth between online or the physical back up, I realized both was better! |

I don't know, I'll have to wait until I get home to look. It does included the backups I made of the laptop and netbook to my desktop. I have 1.75 TB in the desktop with multiple redundant external hard drives.
I have slowed down the process by trying to better organize my desktop, so I've been moving a lot of files around and creating various partitions for specific items (eBooks, music, work stuff, Kindle stuff [but not Kindle books themselves]...). |

Does your ISP not impose any limits on traffic levels? They are pretty much universal here in the UK - eg with my ISP the limit is 60GB of data in a "rolling" 30 day window.
