Free Book (nook) - According to Jane

According to Jane ($8.79 Kindle), by Marilyn Brant, is free from B&N. This title was previously free last year in the Kindle store.

Book Description
In Marilyn Brant's smart, wildly inventive debut, one woman in search of herself receives advice from the ultimate expert in matters of the heart. . .

It begins one day in sophomore English class, just as Ellie Barnett's teacher is assigning Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. From nowhere comes a quiet "tsk" of displeasure. The target: Sam Blaine, the cute bad boy who's teasing Ellie mercilessly, just as he has since kindergarten. Entirely unbidden, as Jane might say, the author's ghost has taken up residence in Ellie's mind, and seems determined to stay there.

Jane's wise and witty advice guides Ellie through the hell of adolescence and beyond, serving as the voice she trusts, usually far more than her own. Years and boyfriends come and go--sometimes a little too quickly, sometimes not nearly fast enough. But Jane's counsel is constant, and on the subject of Sam, quite insistent. Stay away, Jane demands. He is your Mr. Wickham.

Still, everyone has something to learn about love--perhaps even Jane herself. And lately, the voice in Ellie's head is being drowned out by another, urging her to look beyond everything she thought she knew and seek out her very own, very unexpected, happy ending. . .

Raising Jake, by Charlie Carillo, a repeat in the Kindle store from last year, is free from Barnes & Noble and on Kindle.

Book Description
In Charlie Carillo's funny, insightful novel, a divorced man gets to know his seventeen-year-old son in a tale that rewrites the book on quality time together....

Sammy Sullivan is working his way down the ladder of success. Divorced and pushing fifty, his relationships have the longevity of a fruit fly. But how many men can get themselves fired and have their only son expelled from prep school all in one day? Now, after almost eighteen years, he and Jake may finally get to know each other. (That's if his ex-wife--the super-achiever Sammy can only dream of being--doesn't find out.) Jake knows virtually nothing about his roots. So, Sammy shows him the old neighborhood in the far reaches of Queens. But it's been thirty years. The older woman Sammy lost his virginity to now uses a walker to get around. Most of his hangouts are long gone. It's dreary, born-to-lose stuff. But Jake is on a mission. Wise beyond his (and his dad's) years, he doesn't want his father to miss out the second time around on the good things he blew the first time. And they've got a whole weekend together--a journey where Sammy will confront his, dysfunctional childhood and Jake will face a past he never knew he had.

This isn't your typical father-son story--one is still growing up. The other is his son.

Hi, hope this is an OK place to ask this question. - Koland, in your entries at Books on the Knob for the Kobo, you always say that you need to add them to your library so you can read them later. I never saw a space for that, they all seem to open in ADE. Is that what you mean by adding them to your library or is putting them in ADE putting them in your library? Is there another step?

I find ADE very unintuitive, but it appears that opening a epub automatically puts it the ADE library.

Thank you .

At the other stores, you "buy" a free book before you download it (well, except for Smashwords; the don't have any way to "keep" a free book in your library). But, at Kobo, you can just click on "download epub" and have the copy on your computer, but never add it to your Library/Account at Kobo. Underneath the cover of the book, however, you'll see some small text that says "add to library". You'll need to sign in first (so you do need an account at Kobo). Click on that text and it changes to "this book has been added to your library" (or something close to that, since I'm writing from memory). From then on, you can access your Library at Kobo anytime and see that title. You'll be able to re-download it from any computer and if you have the Kobo App, it shows in your archives there (just like books bought in the B&N store show in your B&N library on the nook or in the nook apps). That way, if your computer crashes, the file becomes corrupt or you accidentally delete it, you can always get another copy. If you skip this step (and I did on a few before I figured it out), once the book goes back up in price, you'll lose access to downloads without buying it (at whatever the new price is).

Did that clear it up?

You may have missed the one-day only free book yesterday from the University of Chicago yesterday, but you have most of the month to get Loving Little Egypt ($9.99 Kindle), by Thomas McMahon.

Book Description
In the early 1920s, nearly blind physics prodigy Mourly Vold finds out how to tap into the nation's long distance telephone lines. With the help of Alexander Graham Bell, Vold tries to warn the phone companies that would-be saboteurs could do the same thing, but they ignore him. Unfortunately, his taps do catch the notice of William Randolph Hearst, who hires Thomas Edison to get to the bottom of them—and the chase is on!

Click HERE to sign up for the free book. You'll need to enter your email address, then check your email for the link to download the book. Mine arrived within seconds and it appears I have an entire year to download the book (you get a .ACSM file, which, when opened, will load the PDF book inside of Adobe ADE). This is a DRM'd PDF that is not compatible with the Kindle.

Kell's Legend ($3.99 Kindle), by Andy Remic, the first title in his The Clockwork Vampire Chronicles series, is free from Barnes and Noble today. These Free Friday books often turn up free later for the Kindle, but not always, so grab it while you can. It has good reviews, but is apparently fairly explicit for violence and language.

Book Description
Ferocious fantasy from a real-life hardman come to claim the post-Gemmell world.

THEY CAME FROM THE NORTH AND THE CITY FELL.

It is a time for warriors, a time for heroes. Kell's axe howls out for blood. The land of Falanor has been invaded by an albino army, the Army of Iron. A small group set off to warn the king: Kell, a magnificent and brutal hero; his granddaughter, Nienna and her friend, Katrina; and Saark, the ex-Sword Champion of King Leanoric, disgraced after his affair with the Queen.

Fighting their way south, betrayal follows battle, battle follows deviation, and they are attacked from all quarters by deadly warriors, monstrous harvesters who drain blood from their victims to feed their masters. As Falanor comes under heavy attack and invasion, only then does Nienna begin to learn the truth about grandfather Kell -- that he is anything but a hero. Ferocious fantasy from a real-life hardman come to claim the post-Gemmell world.

Yes, thank you. Oh and thanks for your work on keeping us updated on free and inexpensive ebook. Although in about 6 months I have about 200 books on my nook, and have spent about $50. So maybe I should only download a free book if I've finished something I already have.

I think this is worth repeating, because I was doing it on BN.com and it didn't work. But when you do it on the Nook it does. Got to shop on your nook and put in 0.00 and you'll get the whole list of 956,595 free books. I had the nook display the covers and am randomly scrolling through it now. It will take some time to separate the pepper from the fly poop but it looks like there are some good titles in there. Good Luck!

Not quite free, but The Clan of the Cave Bear is now $1.99. The rest of the series is available as well (I have a full post about them, here).

The Bite Before Christmas, by Heidi Betts, is free on Kindle and in the B&N store.

Book Description
In Heidi Betts’s collection of holiday novellas, vampires turn to Angelina Bertolli—vampire matchmaker extraordinaire—to help them find that special someone to curl up with under the mistletoe…

“All I Vant For Christmas”

Connor loves trimming the Christmas tree, baking gingerbread cookies, and hanging the mistletoe. But his vampire siblings won’t help. His friend Angelina sends party planner Jillian to the rescue. But when Jillian, who’s mortal, discovers she’s decking the halls for a family of vampires, will she run—or will Connor have a beautiful woman to share the holidays with?

“A Vampire in Her Stocking”

When Vivian learns that her secret crush Nick is terminally ill, she’s heartbroken. Confiding in Angelina, Vivian refuses to turn Nick into a vampire. Deciding to play Santa, Angelina changes Nick and leaves him wrapped in a red bow on Vivian’s doorstep…

“It’s A Wonderful Bite”

Although Angelina is happy with her boyfriend Sergio, she’s ready for a commitment. After drinking eggnog and watching It’s a Wonderful Life on Christmas Eve, Angelina falls into a dream where she is mortal and Sergio isn’t interested in her. Talk about the nightmare before Christmas! But Santa must have checked his list twice because this Christmas Angelina’s wishes are coming true…

National bestselling author Heidi Betts loves all things scary and paranormal… though she’s not a big fan of things that go bump in the night. (Hello! Sleeping, here.) When she’s not writing about vampires (among other things), she often dreams of being an undead creature of the night—if only so that she can sleep all day, stay up all night, and never age another minute or gain another pound. The drinking of blood doesn’t necessarily appeal, but it’s something she thinks she could get used to. Plus, she hears it tastes like chicken. For news, information about upcoming books, and tons of mischievous fun.

The Ghost Shrink, The Accidental Gigolo & The Poltergeist Accountant, by Vivi Andrews, is from publisher Samhain and this one looks to be one of their lighter, more humorous selections (rather than hardcore erotica).

Book Description
It’s not smart to piss off a poltergeist…

A Tickle My Fantasy story.

It’s bad enough to be sexually frustrated. But as a medium, it means until Lucy Cartwright gets some, she’s doomed. Oh no, not to death. Worse. To nightly visitations by recently deceased, wanna-be Cassanovas without the bodies to back it up. Then a living, breathing fantasy arrives on her doorstep, and Lucy thinks her dry spell is at an end.

Much as he would like to be Lucy’s personal gigolo, PI Jake Cox has a job to do. He’s been sent to prevent her from getting laid until a particular horny phantom—and key witness in his mob investigation—pays her a visit. The real challenge? Keeping his own hands off Lucy long enough to get the job done.

Or the lonely, geeky ghost of a murdered mob accountant could rip a hole in the fabric of the universe…

Warning: This book contains cheesy pick-up lines, amateur stripteases, and voyeuristic intentions – all by dead men. And the living behave just as badly…

Sandman Slim with Bonus Content by Richard Kadrey is this week's Free Friday book!

This book is rated 4 out of 5 stars by 90 reviewers over on Amazon.com. I know it's been recommended to me by at least 3 friends, and so thought I'd share with the nook forum.

Book Description:

Supernatural fantasy has a new antihero.

Life sucks, and then you die. Or, if you're James Stark, you spend eleven years in Hell as a hitman before finally escaping, only to land back in the hell-on-earth that is Los Angeles.

Now Stark's back, and ready for revenge. And absolution, and maybe even love. But when his first stop saddles him with an abusive talking head, Stark discovers that the road to absolution and revenge is much longer than you'd expect, and both Heaven and Hell have their own ideas for his future.

Resurrection sucks. Saving the world is worse.

Darkly twisted, irreverent, and completely hilarious, Sandman Slim is the breakthrough novel by an acclaimed author.

I read "Slim" a couple of months ago and thoroughly enjoyed it, so much so that I've purchased the newly-released sequel, Kill The Dead. I will advise, however, that if you're not comfortable with profanity and graphic violence in your reading, you may want to pass on these.
