That would be from Edgar Rice Burroughs Venus series.

and the first books is called Pirates of Venus if I don't remember it wrong

Loved those, but not quite as much as his Barsoom series. Those I must have read about eleventy times in my teens

You got it sir. I didn't remember that opening line, but it certainly is a "grabber" in my opinion. I tend to agree that the Mars series was bigger and better as well. I'm reading the first Mars book (A Princess of Mars) now , but was checking this one out.
