i'll try to take some photos tomorrow. i'll see what i can do for the invisible gibbon, however i should tell you right now that i try to keep the cats far away from my liseuses since they can't resist stepping / sitting on any object nearby (seriously, if the entire bed is empty except for the telephone, the cat will curl up nice and comfy on top of the telephone. replace "telephone" with *any* object you could imagine including probably a giant cactus and it's always the same). also i'm not sure i have any balloonies handy. i hope you won't be too disappointed.

i agree !! i noticed a difference when i compared my 700 to hadrien's 600 ; but, it was under bright lights and the difference was not too extreme. but seeing both of them side by side tonight under dimmer more diffuse lighting, it's really striking ! i never had trouble with my 700 but i can tell i'm going to be even happier with the 600 !

By the way, my husband happened to be home for lunch with the Fedex truck arrived, so he knows all about my new reader. He tried to give me a hard time about it, but couldn't keep a straight face. He's of the opinion that money spent on technology is money well spent. Marrying a fellow geek was one of the best decisions I ever made!

i've heard of those vending machines ! i wonder if they'll update the stock any time soon ?

as promised, i did take photos of my sony 1300. i took them in the evening, in low-ish light, because that's when the difference between the screens is most marked. the photos are pretty terrible, because i'm taking them with my telephone-which-also-takes-photos, so you're really better off looking at someone else's photos (anyone else, really) but i think you can at least get an idea from them. and since i did promise...

I think your photos are great and have done an excellent job of capturing the differences I've noticed with my two Sony's, as well!

thanks ! i had to stand in crazy positions to avoid making a shadow with my arm / the camera, so on top of everything else i don't think i had a very steady hand ! but i agree you do get at least some idea of the difference there. in bright light it's not nearly as noticeable.

Wow. Huge difference. I can almost see the dog in the boat (although apparently we were to say nothing of him).

Good job on the side-by-sides. To me, both look very nice. It looks exactly the way my 505 looks when I have the lighted cover over it. Never had any real problems reading that way. Sure, I prefer the nekkid e-ink screen, but the hard plastic covers work just fine also.

The red is absolutely more sexy! Have fun!

hee, yep, i can *almost* see that dog too... i think you can see the difference the best in the first photo (on the home screen), the black areas are quite a bit blacker on the 600.

well, like i said, i can see the difference (mostly in low light ; in bright light, it's quite minimal), but i read for months every day on my 700 and it didn't bother me. and i won't say even now that it's terrible, like some claim. it's not as good as a naked e-ink screen, but it's still quite readable (even in low light ; after all, i do a lot of my reading in bed with just a small lamp).

well, it's not *quite* perfect (i have very high standards ) : to be perfect, the screen would need to be as good as a naked e-ink screen (or better...) while still allowing tactile navigation without a stylus, and allow for user-installed dictionaries of any language, and using multiple dictionaries at the same time (so, if you have 3 dictionaries installed, and the word is present in all three, you can see all results).

but i will definitely agree that it is pretty damned close.
