Device: Irex Iliad
Asus Ebook Reader

I am sort of excited about this device. My ideal ebook reader would be as follows...

8.5x11 diplay of pdfs
Some sort of word doc viewer editor
email/web access
ability to view google books pdfs (without conversion tools)
usb keyboard connectivity.

I had an iliad, and was quite excited about it, I could read many pdfs (though not the google books ones, and I like old obscure books), and while there was an attempt to make software for it, after Irex opened it up for development (Great move by them).

I don't do much in my job, except process information, email, and research, so it does not need to be fast, but I would like to have one device to do this, I realize that a laptop can do this, but I hunch over my desk too much as it is, and I enjoy sitting back in a chair to do my reading, or lay in bed.

I would really like to have linux as the OS, as that would open up some functionality off the bat (perhaps simcty classic, or text adventures would be nice as well).

I really like the eink display, but I would likely be willing to forgo that, as I rarely read outside, and I could dock more often without much suffering.

I have been awaiting the apple tablet, as I am sure it will be a slick and well thought out device, but I dislike the closed-ness aspect of the device.

Just curious, what is the difference between the "ç" and "c".

"ç" is always pronounced as "s". "c" is pronounced as "k" unless it is followed by an e or an i, then it is pronounced "s". so the c in "franc" is pronounced as "frank" (although the k at the end is not very strong), the c in "france" is pronounced like in english, and the ç in "français" is pronounced as "s" whereas "francais" would be pronounced "frankais".

Very cool thanks zelda. So is the "ç" considered a letter in the French alphabet or is it just considered a hyphenated word?

hm, you mean an accented word ? the "ç" is considered an accented letter, not a separate letter (although it does have its very own glyph in complete fonts) and it's called "c cédille" the cédille being the little curly accent.

I wish English would use something like this. It would make things so much easier for children who are learning to read. Of course, then you went and spoiled it by adding additional rules like English does; "i before e except after c. . ."!

I liked the look of the two "page" reader and can see a number of apps for students. As Patricia said, it would be a great way for students to consult to separate texts which happens frequently when studying.

Oh, and I LOVE my liseuse!

Hahahaha! You hit it right on the nail. LICE, indeed! It's a nasty-sounding word, if I ever heard one.

New details about the upcoming Asus readers.

http://www.examiner.com/x-18821-Virg...g-Asus-ereader

Personally I think the webcam, speaker and mic are overkill, that will most likely increase the price for features that most won't be looking in an eReader. If I want PC functionality I'll buy a PC, not an eReader.

And I'm puzzled about reports that it will have color display. For what I know color eInk doesn't exist yet which mean the Asus reader would have to be LCD which wouldn't be good.

I believe using a foreign term, especially to avoid a repetition when the common English term was already used a few lines before, is an accepted practice.

I recently read some books from Churchill (who is arguably the most notable English of the last century AND a literature Nobel prize winner) and he was also using foreign words.

Nonetheless, if liseuse is not acceptable, I would suggest using the word "Ereader".
But now I must run before the Language Police catch me and club me to death.

I can't believe how many forum threads are getting hijacked by language discussions and arguments about what ebook hardware should be called & it's by the same few people each time. Moderators might have to start taking care of this.
I came here to read about the new Eee Reader (what a cool play on the name BTW), but instead see discussions on liseuse. It seems that there are only a few who want to use that name and they are destroying the forum with promoting it's use. People (non MobileRead forum members) are starting to know what an e-reader device is and now some want to change the name. No one will know what you are talking about. We want to promote e-reader devices, do we not. They are electronic reading devices and e-reader suits perfectly. I have been a member of this forum for most of this year and I have only just learned of the term liseuse. I even have to check on how to spell it every time I have to type it. I'm sticking with e-reader & I think that Eee Reader is such a cool name by Asus. Let's stick to the topics please. If you must promote liseuse then keep to it's own thread please.

One more thing that looks good about the Eee Reader is that if it folds up then the screens are protected. I love that idea.

Considering the uses you are describing, what you need is a tabletpc.

I think you are getting a bit carried away with the actual damage it is doing to the forum, but with so many searches on ebooks leading towards this site it does seem to be quite unhelpful for people to try and push this fairly stupid attempt to create some kind of in-joke meme.

X,

Exactly the same is true with French words used in English. That is why the word "façade" is written with a "c cedilla". You would never (I hope!) spell it "facade", without the cedilla.
