Does Disney have some kind of obligation to make movies with a set number of "minorities" or other special interest groups that I am not aware of?

99.9% of tv/movies are already geared towards white males. I think it's a bit much to complain that there aren't any Dutch characters on tv.

You should look up the term white male privilege

a) even though my nationality is dutch you have no clue of my skin color.
b) the point is: is any given company obliged to cater to specific groups at all?

Increasingly it seems to me that the only thing of consequence Europe is decidedly behind North America is acknowledging and trying to combat racism.

Although doubtless our Dutch friend, who no doubt has nightmares about spiralling Minarets every night, will explain soon enough why I am wrong and indeed downright ignorant for thinking so.

TBH was this really an "issue" until "Disney Princess" became a line in it's own right? And that wasn't until 2000.

At which point yea I can see the arguement "Well everyone has a princess but me" becomes a point for little girls. But still it's taken Disney almost a decade to round out the toyline a bit more. Which is deplorable.

No, the ignorance comes out in the various unwarranted assumptions you continue to make.

I've been to Holland and my husband is Flemish. the richer areas of the country are white, white, white, and white.

The only time I saw people of color was when I went to the red light districts. Not saying there aren't wealthy people of color in Belgium and Holland but...they aren't the majority.

http://www.unbeknownst.org/privilege.htm

My husband is a bit racist and that doesn't come from nowhere.

edit: All this has been sorted out further down the thread. I'm against deleting my words but please ignore this. Feathers have been smoothed out, Amalthia and me had a misunderstanding, all is well with the world.

Wow, congrats. A solid base for your broad strokes of judgment. A city visit and a racist Flemish husband. Awesome.

There is? Are you saying that libraries are locking up/getting rid of books that are popular? Sorry-but I don't think that's the case. Yes, the complaints might help them decide that a book isn't popular-but that's been a problem with democracy since ancient Greece. (How do you know whether or not something is popular? You either take a poll or you compare the number of compliments to the number of complaints. Or you can take it away & see how many complaints you get about that. Sort of an ex post facto poll, I guess.)

And I tried to point out that the issue of locking it up or getting rid of it has no bearing on the issue of whether or not it's censorship. That's just a decision on what is to be done with a book that you already have but no longer feel is worth keeping available for the general public. And if I haven't yet made my opinion clear, a book that is not kept on the shelf should either be disposed of or warehoused in case of future popularity. Warehoused books *might* be available by special request, but I could see that possibly being subject to an 'unpacking' fee. (For physical books, at least. Can't really see why eBooks should ever be warehoused.)

I'm just saying what I saw in the 6 months I was there. In the Flemish part of the country it was very white compared to Houston, TX for example.

there are areas of the United States that are very white as well with maybe 1% of other ethnic groups but it's much harder to see that if you're not there long enough.

I'm coming from cities in the South like San Antonio, Austin, and Houston where the majority population is hispanic and black. Though the majority of people in power are white.

Belgium looked white. Out of my husband's entire group of friends no one was black or indian or asian or anything but white. That's kind of telling.

There is no "Flemish" part of the Netherlands. Could you have stayed here for 6 months without realising the difference between the Netherlands and Belgium? Or are you equating the Netherlands and Belgium in some way?
