You do of course realize that Mobipocket had this in their contract before Amazon bought them, right?

Provided, that you're right with the costs of development, Eowyn, and that the problem doesn't lie elsewhere.
I don't know where Bebook is. But Pocketbook is in ukraine. Salary are not the same, we have tons of taxes...

Well, here I see two options, it's either gonna be Bookeen who will outsource the development outside France or it's gonna be me
I hope that don't happens ! Would make me VERY unhappy with bookeen.
I'll rather wait for the firmware. We have more that enough companies outsourcing already !

BeBook is from the Netherlands, not a low-wage country either.

And, sure, the Ukrainian wages may well be lower. But from all I've experienced in my past years, they've got some damn good programmers in Eastern Europe, so outsourcing may not be such a bad idea ... - to get the job finally done.

If your boss tell you "sorry, we're outsourcing your job, you're fired." You'll still thing outsourcing a good idea ?
And we know how to program in France.

I think there's no need to go as far as to outsource, it would completely suffice if Bookeen went opensource. But, of course, in such case they might not be bound by "exclusive" contracts with mobipocket and such, as they are now.

That's capitalism for you. Lower your taxes, take smaller salaries or tell your corporations
not to be so greedy. Outsourcing surely wasn't devised in countries where jobs are now outsourced to.

If you make pure opensource software you will never be able to add DRMed formats

Then don't support drm at all
More seriously, linux can use proprietary stuff But it would cause some mess, yes.

Speaking from personal experience, it's never that nice. The boss says "you have six months to train these people to do your job, and then you're fired. And if you don't do it well, or make the slightest fuss, you won't get your severance, and you won't get unemployment benefits....

No, they didn't give a date for the firmware.
Expectations were high that we would have it soon, but in the light of the many problems they encountered during the development, they preferred not to give a precise date.

The firmware they give us during the RendezVous is a beta one, not a final, so no, they don't "have the (final) firmware"!

You haven't been around in Germany alot, right? Outsourcing is very common over here, and you get used to it. And I'm not talking about outsourcing to foreign countries, but outsourcing and the side effect of pseudo self-employed ex-employees who work for lower wages than before and have cover all the social insurances themselves.

And you don't have to fire an employee just because you're about to outsource one project.

Quote:

I very well assume that the French do. But either Bookeen doesn't have a.) the money to hire enough people or b.) the money to hire the best people around.

So - from Bookeen's viewpoint - outsourcing to the Ucraine e.g. might indeed make some sense.
