Describing a UK address as being in the US is a loophole that the distributors may be putting a blind eye to - but if it results in a sale in breach of an agreement with publishers who have exercised their right to restrict sales to a geographic distribution, then it is likely to be the seller who will suffer to the detriment of buyers.

I'm surprised that with a membership of nearly 40k we don't have a least one lawyer who could provide some guide on what is right or wrong.

You mean legal and ilegal. Big difference

But keep in mind they'd have to specialise in a fairly narrow area of the law and less than 2000 have looked at this thread, so not really that suprising. Harry is right though, nothing ilegal is being done.

Right and wrong is pretty subjective so you have to decide for yourself.

Assuming that HarryT is correct, then there is no *legal* problem.
Except, of course, for two things.
One, if there are some fine-print terms and conditions of the downloading website which say (in effect) that you can only download if the you are in the US or
Two if that is implied.
To use a deception to work around these conditions of use maybe a fraud and thus criminal conduct.
This would make you a pirate, as I said in the beginning.
As far as *moral* conduct goes, we each make our individual decision.
For my part, I am *morally* comforted that HarryT seems not to see any of this as wrong.

So, in essence, if Harry doesn't perceive something as wrong, it isn't? Isn't using your personal conscience a better way to feel your way through this labyrinth?

Why can't they both be legal purchasers? I mean, it doesn't have to be either/or - in a sane world, which we do not have, alas.

Absolutely right. I have certainly neither the qualifications nor the wish to be perceived as MR's "moral arbitor" .

Too late for that. I for one will be shouting "BUT HARRY TOLD ME TO DO IT" if the boys in blue come to take me away

Pratchett's books (or rather some of them) were in Waterstones.com and whsmith.co.uk.

They seem to have gone! Waterstones.com have been missing all day - whsmith.co.uk were there when I started researching this issue this morning, then disappeared. I have two browsers on two computers - one has three pages in respsonse to a search for Pratchett - the other is empty.

Completeness is an issue in the UK. A number of Ian Rankins's Rebus novels were missing - odd volumes, like #6. I queried with the publisher, and was told that they had a system date of 31/12/2011 - which apparently was a standard "not sure" date. Last week the missing volumes suddenly appeared.

The discworld novels seemed to have the same problem. Hopefully their removal is temporary, and they'll come back with fewer gaps!

Odd.
