I just found this thread - I hadn't noticed it before, and I love it!

The whole site is a little bit scary to start with, but whilst slowly joining in I've found people are very friendly and welcoming, and the Lounge is becoming my favourite part of the site. It was helped when I was ill and had to take a day off work and discovered the joy of spending all day reading posts, and was helped when I lost my job and everyone was sympathetic and patient with my ranting!

I'll answer as many questions as I can remember, and probably add a few bits of extra information on the way.

Chocolate's my favourite food (dark chocolate obviously). I don't think I should have to choose between Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, there's time for both. We never had pets when I was young as we had a baby sister instead. Once I saw how much hassle that was, I decided to keep my life pet free for a while, but if I ever change my mind it'll probably be a cat as I'm too lazy to walk a dog every day

I read a lot, which is why I'm wearing this shirt. Reading was so much more appealing than doing the laundry.

I'm also quite nosy, which is why I read everyone else's answers before I thought about mine.

I picked my username because when faced by an empty box my imagination ran away, and as my real surname is difficult to spell I liked the idea of a world where my name was simple.

I often find I can't sleep. I used to read, now I read on my sony and check MR at the same time (often with a cup of tea - if I'm awake anyway the caffeine isn't going to hurt). With an international community, there are always other people here.

And yes I'd love a drink - whatever's on offer, not fussy.

In case you hadn't realised I also talk too much ...

See.... these threads do breed overnight! I just found this thread and, like the others, just don't know how I missed it!

:takingmikeforherturn: ah..humm :screechsound: "Whoops, could someone turn this down? What? Oh, move it back from my mouth? Gotch ya!"

OK, well, umm, well, thanks to all of those, ah... This is a lot harder to do than I thought! :swingingherbodybackandforthwhileholdingthemike:

Thanks to all of you for your courage in sharing and I would like to say I love reading everyone's comments on this forum. I usually pop in some during the day, but mostly I cruise through late at night (which I guess is early morning for those across the pond).

I've found lots of very useful information about my 505 on this forum and many people very willing to help. I may not have enjoyed my 505 as much without this forum and all of the beautifully formatted books offered here. I've even started to enjoy some of the classics I'd passed over before.

I especially love that the authors on this forum are so very willing to share their work with us.

Like the others before me, I was intimidated by the lounge and all the insider knowledge and jokes. Doing searches to figure it out resulted in many pages of threads and tid bits of information. (Not to mention hours of reading to simi figure out what was going on. Then, heaven forbid, if I missed logging on for a day or two! I think threads breed overnight!)

Gesh, a beginners MR dictionary would be great!!

I want to thank everyone (that should make sure I don't forget anyone) for making this such a great forum to visit, learn, and have fun reading.

@ Alphapheemail I just knew that Godiva chocolates and the song, "I Believe in Miracles" by Hot Chocolate would help.

Oh, yeah, answers to the questions... :idon'trememberanythingi'vejustsaidandhopethati haven'tmadeafoolofmyself:

I love dark chocolate, cats, and Monty Python.

I vote for everything, Fridays are junk food days, send me a ticket and I'll be there (Paris), and what's a duck?

I'm more than willing to lend you money... um.. could I borrow 20 bucks ?

It's been sooo long that I don't even remember why I chose my user name. I think it was something to do with some poetry I wrote. Sueños was taken, so I used the English translation - dreams.

I'll take a chocolate ZC, please..

And in closing, I would like to say.....

What pants? I always wear this shirt at home.

Verencat, GraceKrispy, Alphapheemail, dreams and Ruth -- I'm so very glad you've all turned up in the lounge. I was starting to feel a bit anxious standing at the edge of the party by myself and not understanding any of the cool kids' jokes -- so thank goodness you're here. Welcome!

By the way, that cool kid over there has these really good drinks...

For those who don't know, allow me to introduce myself.

I'm DesertGrandma. Desert, because I live in the desert, and Grandma because I am one. Clever, eh?

I innocently wandered here just about a year ago, after purchasing my Kindle1. You know, that device thats getting the crap beat out of it in my poll. (click on the link).

Being totally ignorant, I just kept asking questions, and people kept answering them. No one swept me out with the trash, so I kinda just ............stayed.

I like to travel the boards, but have learned to not get involved in TOO serious discussions. There-in lies the road to hell. Trust me.

I like helping people, when I can.........or at least directing them to where they can get help.

I like meeting new people, and saying "hi, and welcome to MobileRead." Cassidym is better at this........

I love the unconditional acceptance I've found here. The members are truly the 'wings under my feet'. So many times, I've been sad, mad, depressed, and this place, just reading the posts, has made me feel better.

Has anyone noticed I like doing polls, also?

We are a microcosm (sp?) of what the real world could be like. People chatting, disagreeing, but always being able to stay civil. Almost always. People supporting one another, regardless of cultural differences, race, sexual orientation, religion, or lack thereof.

I don't know how, or why, but somehow we've all found one another.

And we are continually finding ourselves welcoming 'newbies'. Some stay, some don't.

Those who stay.........become one of us.

Thanks for listening.

Oh, crap. I've created a monster. Look, I'll get to creating your individualised Bilbophies soon, I promise, but it might take a few days as this afternoon I'm off to my brother's in Brissie for a few days.

Cheers,

I'll go with Monty Python, but why not Will Ferrell? There must be a gazillion jokes I didn't get because of this!
Oh, there's no jokes. The name's very inclusion in a sentence virtually guarantees that. "Why not Will Ferrell?" Because Will Ferrell is to comedy what sauteed rat droppings are to a punk rock cover of Jet Boy, Jet Girl: completely and utterly unrelated.

To ignore ravenne, just shout "Hey, look over there, Ravenne! It's a poll with an option for "GERMANY!" that's currently losing!" and the rest pretty much takes care of itself.

YES! PLEASE! Oups...no, sorry, I promised I wouldn't...

Psst! Make it, give it to ShortNCudlyAm and have her bring it to me, DGMa won't notice!
The bar is open, and there are no ID checks taking place. DGMa has been distracted by a sign in the corner saying "FREE DENTURE LUBE-AND-ADJUST", so just stay out of stick radius and you'll be fine to imbibe, and then pretty soon it won't matter...nothing will.

In the lounge. Half hoping someone will respond to me, half hoping they won't (for fear it'll be someone with some witty remark I just don't quite get or won't know how to respond to).

It was probably a "WE WANT MORE BUTTER!" protest. Those French folk can never get enough. Every French recipe starts "1. Put 5 litres of butter in a bowl".

You already have, and well before you even made it to this thread. You've already said elsewhere a whole lot of stuff that had me scratching my scalp wonder just what the blinding blazes you were talking about, and that pretty much clinched it for me. BFF! [WARNING: Confirmation of BFF! status may lead to imprisonment, forcible restraint, sedation, bananas-bonked-on-forehead, and many strange-coloured drinks with twirly straws in them. anyhow... a few things about me...

1. a few days ago I was bout to be kicked out of this forum since i lost my reader... but Dreams came to the rescue, she? gave me chocolate and my reader magically appeared by an angel.. (QZ?)
An angel with green jetboots? That'll be QZ, alright. Also, as Gabrielle used to not sing, "Dreams can come through, look at me babe I'm with you, you know you gotta have hope, you know you gotta be strong...".

2. i am a bio major... (hence the loathe for phonics...)
I am a mechanoid minor. I can't legally drink synthetic oils (not that the law has ever stopped me).

I like sauce on my pie, in my pie, and around my pie.

I voted for New Coke because it's important to subvert the dominant paradigm, but I don't have any real vision.

What was that? Sorry, I was busy aligning all the things on my desk at right angles to each other (it makes it a bugger to type though, when your keyboard is perpendicular to your monitor).

6. i have a genetic deposition to hate new yorkers. (you only get the mutant allele if you are born in ny)
You know, that'll just lead to the dark side, and then you'll have to listen to Hayden Christensen get all sulky and try to act all dark, moody and evil but just come off like a whiny brat cryin' for his stuffed ewok-bear, and do you really want that? Do you? You do? Oh, well, fair enough then.

7. i print out threads to read on the bus... =0 I just started laoding them up on my reader.... Asimov feels neglected cuz of psocks...
~sigh~ Yes, I know. The common irony that obsession with MobileRead leads to less reading (of books), mobile or otherwise.

The Lounge is actually the whole website - all those other places are just the anterooms.

Yeah, well, that sucked harder than the air into Spencer Pratt's ears, and it's only that you seemed so reasonable about it that stopped me from requesting an entire battalion of Solid Gold Disco Dancing PNSs over to your workplace to "have a word" with those responsible (I believe the "word" the PNS most commonly like to have is "eviscerate", though "emasculate" runs a close second when gender-applicable).

I'll answer as many questions as I can remember, and probably add a few bits of extra information on the way.
When stuck with a question you don't want to answer, answer a question you do, even if it hasn't been asked. This tip has been brought to you by every politician that ever lived, and the number "eleventy".

Chocolate's my favourite food (dark chocolate obviously).
I think, maybe, someone here maybe once mentioned that they occasionally partake in a piece of chocolate, thinking it okay, so you might find someone else here with at least a smidge of empathy for that food-preference.

I don't think I should have to choose between Douglas Adams and Terry Pratchett, there's time for both.
The important thing is, you didn't say "Will Ferrell".

We never had pets when I was young as we had a baby sister instead. Once I saw how much hassle that was, I decided to keep my life pet free for a while, but if I ever change my mind it'll probably be a cat as I'm too lazy to walk a dog every day
Oddly, as the person for whom "lazy" is a core-part of their life-philosophy, walking the dogs is one of my most significant pleasures, twice a day. I'll admit, though, that our former Homer (the cat) required less "maintenance" than the two terrierists. You know, if you said "ferrets" here...well, there's no wrong answer, and you wouldn't have been alone (though if you said "spiders", Queen Zee wouldn't be visiting you anytime soon, and would probably put you on her "Ignore list", not for personal reasons but to avoid any chance of your posting photos ).

I read a lot, which is why I'm wearing this shirt. Reading was so much more appealing than doing the laundry.
Punching myself repeatedly in the face is much more appealing than doing the laundry (though it's still better than vacuuming).

I'm also quite nosy, which is why I read everyone else's answers before I thought about mine.
Please, ask any questions, no matter how absurd (and sometimes the more absurd the better). You can't be too nosy unless you ask where I buried the bodies.

I picked my username because when faced by an empty box my imagination ran away, and as my real surname is difficult to spell I liked the idea of a world where my name was simple.
Well, I could call you "simple", but it makes me uncomfortable so I'll just call you "Ruth" (and I hope you aren't my Aunty Ruth, because family awkwardness may result. Do you live in the Hunter region in New South Wales, Australia, and do you have a sister who's a passive aggressive nightmare to her children?).

I often find I can't sleep. I used to read, now I read on my sony and check MR at the same time (often with a cup of tea - if I'm awake anyway the caffeine isn't going to hurt). With an international community, there are always other people here.
For me, people on MR seem to start "waking up" or "getting home from work" at about 11:30pm my time. It's enough to drag me into the wee hours.

And yes I'd love a drink - whatever's on offer, not fussy.
One Zany Carter Deluxe, coming right up. Here, you might want to attach this solid lead, Queen Anne armoire to your ankle with the enclosed handcuffs. Trust me, it'll give a nice, solid [blip!] on the Post-ZCD Patient-Retriever device later on (well, technically, what with the time-travel, earlier on, but who's counting).

That's what she said. I've found lots of very useful information about my 505 on this forum and many people very willing to help. I may not have enjoyed my 505 as much without this forum and all of the beautifully formatted books offered here. I've even started to enjoy some of the classics I'd passed over before.
Yes, and practical considerations and appreciations should never be ignored, and so I offer those same people (well, not the 505 people, because they probably didn't help me much with my Iliad problems, but, still, that's not to undermine their efforts at all) a laurel and hardy handshake (yeah, I'm plagiarising Blazing Saddles) to all those who have done all the good things that make me want to send them all a strip-a-gram of their preference, or possibly just a gift voucher for their favourite (e)book store if only I had the means and didn't have the Restraining Orders against me.

I especially love that the authors on this forum are so very willing to share their work with us.
I know. They're like J.K.Rowling, but without the money and with the progressive thought processes. Not to mention being just totally swell people.

Like the others before me, I was intimidated by the lounge and all the insider knowledge and jokes. Doing searches to figure it out resulted in many pages of threads and tid bits of information. Hey, feel free to ask questions. At the very least someone will point you towards a relevant thread, where any apparent joke will become much clearer [he says, trying not to laugh hysterically].

I want to thank everyone (that should make sure I don't forget anyone) for making this such a great forum to visit, learn, and have fun reading.
Oh, yeah. I nearly forgot all those things. Practical consideration is not my strong suit (and my strong suit is at the dry-cleaners - they better read the tags or it'll rust up quicker than an Alfa Romeo at a salt-farm)

Thoughts are being mulled like alcoholic grape juice as to selection of your individualised Bilbophy. I suspect penguins may be involved, though no guarantees.

Cheers,
Marc
Yikes, you kind of remind me of the me I used to be, or the me that's still somewhere in my head. Or an exboyfriend that was like the me I used to be (that's why we dated). Hey, you aren't my exboyfriend are you? Can you sing all the "They Might be Giants" songs? Because I still can.

There's only two songs in me, and I just wrote the third... don't know where I got the inspiration or how I found the words, spent my whole life just digging up my music's shallow grave, for the two songs in me, and the third one I just made....

This could be scary.... said the actress to the kangaroooooooo

Stop talking to me, replied the kangaroo

(believe or not, I don't have a thing for penguins. I just happened to like their avatars)
