It is certainly still in copyright in Canada.
Having been reminded of the recent case in the 10th Circuit Court by Ralph Sir Edward, I agree that currently it may be in the public domain in parts of the United States. I suppose the question is, which state contains the MobileRead US server? ![]() I'd suggest that it would be best not to upload it until things are clearer - i.e. the US Supreme Court has ruled one way or another. |

Actually, we need a server in the US 10th appellate court area.... I hope my remiinder didn't bother you Pdurrant. No offence intended, Copyright law is murky, except where it's totally incoherent. |

There's just no hope, is there
![]() Back on topic. I want to recommend two great great science fiction books. Unfortunately, they're not available as legal ebooks, or as printed books. You can either find them at a used book shop (very hard to find, unless it's through an online store, such as Abebooks) or download them from the so called Darknet, which I did (I also own the paperback version). The books are: The Vang: The Military Form & The Vang: The Battlemaster by Christopher B. Rowley. Great SF story, with a bit of horror thrown in. Each is a standalone, But they feature the same aliens. IMO they are the most scary aliens I've ever read about. Jim Butcher's Codex Alera series features very similar creatures, but Rowley done them first and his description & characterization of them (what I remember of it) is much better. The movie(s) Alien feature similar aliens as well, but again, Rowely's just scare me more ![]() If you love science fiction or horror you must give this a try. ![]() from reading through the first few posts, i'd add the Richard K Morgan altered carbon series, as i'd recommend the sword of ice and fire series, even though it's like reading the grindingly longest book at times. the malazan books by steven Erikson get progressively better, or rather different, but it's rather common with heavy-duty 'epic' fantasy settings. much unlike reading the sword of truth or wheel of time series, which is endearing then torturous to get through past the 3rd-4th book. also, the infinitely popular Jim Butcher's dresden files series and the Lilith Saintcrow Dante Valentine books, amongst others. also, i'd pick Justina Robson's Quantum Gravity series (keeping it real, selling out, going under), though, not an ebook. though, i did find the first book as an ebook online long after i'd bought it, and there's sample chapters at the pyr books blog of books 2 and 3. and, anything on the pyr books blog, in general. the resnick starship series looks interesting and possibly the brent weeks assassin series is in my queue to read next. i read some of the amazon.com reviews, it seems like an interesting take on the zombie/hive/infection trope/meme/something, a much creepier version of the modern take on it, i.e. halo's flood, dead space, alien, stargate, even 'the host' by stephenie meyer, etc. who knew alien parasites would become 'cute' over time.
i'll keep an eye out, i think i've got about 3 2nd hand bookshops within walking distance and a public library that's net accessible if i get around to finishing the books in my queue at the moment, but i'm pretty sure i'll have to scout around for it anyway. |

Regarding Elfhunter, I'm aware that the book is sold in paperback at Amazon and barnesandnoble.com. It's also available on Kindle. If it's not available on Mobipocket already, I'm sure it will be soon. But you can visit the author's website or/and email her if you have any questions. Simply go to www.elfhunter.net. |

So there is no reason to think that it will be available anywhere except on the Kindle. The problem is that other ebook sites are not generally favorable to individual authors. |

Wallcraft,
Many of the independently published authors who I am familiar with have published their books on both Kindle and MobiPocket. You are correct in saying that there are some publishers who won't publish their eBooks using MobiPocket. But most of the POD publishers leave it to the author to prepare their eBooks. In the case of Elfhunter, Authorhouse is one of the publishers who doesn't offer a Kindle book submission service. This means the author is the one who prepared her Kindle book. There is no reason why she can't publish her book on MobiPocket, since the decision is hers to make and not her publisher. Barring some contractual obligation, I am quite sure that if enough readers were to request it, she would happily publish her book on MobiPocket. After all, authors write books to be read by as many people possible. Last edited by KevisHendrickson; 05-26-2009 at 10:27 PM. |

I am 1/2 way through The Alchemyst by Michael Scott, and it is fantastic. Great characterization, very good pacing with just the right amounts of down time without the lengthy history or technical disortations, and neat edge-of-your-seat story.
First read by this author, but won't be my last. |
