Expansys has just changed the status of my order:

Main Status: Ready to ship
Explanation: This order has completed processing and is waiting to be packed and shipped.

Weird..

An hour later, it says:

Main Status: Awaiting Stock
Explanation: We are currently awaiting the stock required to fulfil your order.

Hmmm...

My wife says that I'm obsessed with getting an e-book reader in my hands-- you be the judge. I live in the US and ordered the silver unit with tan cover from the US site on Saturday evening, in case it matters.

When I called the UK number Monday 8am UK time, the rep said they would most likely get a bunch more in stock within the next five days. I questioned this, asking her how she can be sure she'll get in more units when the website said the item would no longer be stocked. She reiterated that she was pretty sure they'd get more units in within four or five days. I asked how many other people I was waiting behind, and she said I was #80.

When I called the US number Monday 8am US time, the rep said that he wasn't sure when the stock would come in, but it could be four or five weeks out. He didn't have any other info to share with me.

Today I called the US number to find out if I could get any more status. The rep said he was unsure when (or if) the next stock would come into the US warehouse from the UK, or even how many pieces it would be. He wouldn't even guess any date because he didn't want to get my hopes up on a ship date. I asked what number I was in order, and he said that the computer doesn't tell him what number I am, only that there were 97 orders waiting to be shipped. I mentioned that someone else on "a certain forum" had mentioned that their order was shipped, and he said that his computer indicates the last shipment to a customer for this product was in late December. So.... it sounds like their US computer system is incorrect, or he read it incorrectly?

I think I agree with makincheez and moz that Expansys is selling stuff they don't have, but to be fair to them they haven't billed me yet either. If they get more in, they will sell several dozen to others and then hopefully I'll get my turn to do business with them...

I'll probably wait a week before calling them again, but that won't stop me from checking the online status a "few" times a day

This is getting silly. Either they have stock to shiop or they do not. Changing the status of the order to say yes we will ship you one and then back to no, we won't ship you one is just wrong. If they don't have a unit in hand to go out to the person who ordered it, then don't say they do.

It does sort of feel like chain yanking. I ordered on the 13th with Paypal and my linked bank account has already been hit. When I click on the order tracking link it says "awaiting stock" and status is "normally less than 5 days". I should have used a credit card so I'd have more buyer protection. Lesson learned. I feel like neveroddoreven above. I've wanted an e-ink device ever since the Sony 500 was just a press release. Now that I've placed my order, I've become obsessed with getting my device. This must be how people in the Nigerian e-mail scams feel. If I hang on just a little bit longer, surely everything will turn out all right!

Heh, this feeling probably applies to both the victims *and* the "Nigerians"

I didn't think it was legal to charge people for an item that is out of stock. Especially an item that they are not sure they will be getting back in stock.

As for PayPal, you do have protection. But you have to contact PayPal within 30 days or you lose that protection.

They should decide quickly if they intend or not to fulfill the existing orders... If they can't fulfill them, they should just cancel the orders, send a e-mail apologizing with a discount code within. It would be the best way to put some professionalism into a situation that is going way beyond silly.

A discount code would not do as an apology if there's nothing you want.

I'm already up working late, so I decided I'd give Expansys UK a jingle again. The rep I talked to, Ian, put me on hold for a bit and talked to someone else, and then informed me that he didn't know if they will ever get stock in to fulfill my order. He said that Expansys is about to receive some more refurb stock, but the amount being received only covers backorders placed as early as January. Since I'm at least #80 in line, I definitely won't get my order filled.

Ian then went on to stress that he doesn't know if Expansys will ever carry the refurbished PRS-505 reader ever again, in any color. He suggested at least three times during the call that I cancel my order and consider buying it elsewhere. I used a credit card, so I'm not out any dough, but for those of you who used Paypal you'll need to decide if you want to wait it out or call up Expansys for a refund. I think another poster said earlier that Paypal protection only lasts 30 days. In the unlikely event that you want your coupon code back too, you'll have to speak to them on the phone about that too.

That was yesterday.
Today I got a message, that they had a system error and it´s quite possible that they can't realize my order.
Very poor, that they need 4 days to recognise the error.

Update: Last message - They cancelled the order, because they don't get any PRS-505.

I think its extreme. The day (13/02/2009, 10.15 am) after I made my order (with credit card) I called the hungarian support and the guy said my order will be okay I'll get it this week. Monday when I called them to be sure, an other guy told me they dont know nothing about it, when/ever will they get it. After that my status changed and than changed back. I think its not normal. Making a game with everyone by change their status this way. If they know, they wont get any, send mail to everyone, not to hope needlessly.

I suspect that their inventory system probably doesn't draw a distinction with regard to orders waiting in the queue. For instance, if they found another 5 units, the system would report all our orders as in stock and ready to ship. Then after the first five orders are fulfilled it reverts back to "awaiting stock". That is just a guess, but it would explain the behavior we've seen.

It hasn't even been a full week yet. I'll give them a week or two before canceling my order. You never know. Maybe they'll find a new source for stock.

I received a mail yesterday. My order was canceled. I guess the waiting is over now.
