So the way to go about this is to download all Amazon books to one of those older Kindles, dedrm, and move on?

I’m just sad that after my K3 breaks, I won’t be able to play Yahtzee ever again on a Kindle

It's because the DRM for KFX was built to be able to be changed as Amazon sees fit. And they have changed it on Kindles with a 5.16.2.1.1 on up. Amazon can remotely change the DRM. They have also changed the DRM on K4PC, K4MAC, and K4Android. I'm guessing also K4iOS/K4iPadOS.

Yes.

I always remove DRM from ebooks as soon as I've bought them. One never knows when things will change to prevent (temporarily, one hopes) DRM removal.

So far Kindles on firmware 5.16.2.1.1 and 5.18.5 and up are the ones getting KFX DRM which cannot be removed at the moment. But soon probably all Kindles which get kfx. Which is all the ones they're not cutting off next month.

DRM can currently be removed from the latest Kindle for PC books, but there are hints that Kindle for PC might not be around much longer.

So I won't dissuade you. They've been moving away from azw3 and toughening kfx drm for years now.
