I'm also using patches for 4.38.23171 (a lot of them, over 20) on my Kobos. No issues.

And there's one other thing I've forgotten to mention. The patches for 4.38.23171 are easier to apply given that they are all in the kobopatch.yaml file and the either or patches are put together.

I would suggest just using your Aura HD and if at some point, you need to replace the internal µSD card, you can request an image. This pushes the need to open up your Aura HD to when and if needed. |

It is stated that my new purchase was produced in 2023 using new technologies borrowed from other e-books which is explained in the about Kobo.
Since in my many attempts it turned out that the Nickel Menu did not work correctly and stuck in most cases and through it I wanted to run the Browser I decided to restore from the image I had made before I started the experiments with the program Disk Genius it turned out that I had damaged the system and had to make a factory reset. However, it turned out that the version was very old and there was a problem with WiFi connectivity so I had to log in with the desktop application to recognize the cobot and log in then immediately without disconnect I installed the update 4.38.21908 and rebooted. I then installed the necessary patches following the instructions on a Russian forum also installed Nickel Menu then tried to manually install KOreader but it turned out that on 10 attempts one time it started Nickel - just stuck and wanted to restart so I removed it and installed KOreader & Plato oneclick Installation. I put in the necessary dictionaries and I'm done. The Nickel Menu I didn't remove as I've only left the browser to launch from it. I didn't know how to upload books to read so I created a Books folder in the root directory and uploaded Agatha Christie's novels to the 160 books to sample which I guess Nickel recognized and added them to the library. I don't know where or how to report problems with the Nickel Menu and the problem with Plato - it doesn't pull up the Cyrillic keyboard but has some keyboard of its own that doesn't have Cyrillic in it. |

For what little it may be worth, I bounced a query off a Kobo staffer a few days back and from they had to say, the last Aura HD was manufactured in January, 2015 and was officially discontinued in March, 2015. Kobo has nothing to do with a device that you state was manufactured in 2023 other than being interested in the illegal use of Kobo's trademarks.
Can you post a screenshot of the About screen you mentioned? |

Those are just the standard screens documenting details of the Kobo FIRMWARE and underlying components and do NOT reflect manufacturing data or any specific hardware info.

The 2023 is the firmware year not the device year.

You really should go to 48.23171 as it's the latest firmware for the Aura HD.

I'm pretty sure that's hogwash and what you actually bought is an used Kobo Aura HD from 2013-2015.

Also, @filchef should leave this thread, go to the other thread, get the patches for the recent firmware and upgrade to the recent firmware. I've already told him they work even though listed as unofficial. IMHO, any patches that work are official.
