Once when we had two lines in our office, I called one number from the other and put them both on hold!

Boss didn't like that much whenhe & the rest of the office personnel returned from a long lunch. But I was new in that office & I knew none of the calls were for me & no one else was there. I got tired of taking messages.

You needed the "send to voicemail" function. Press one button and you no longer have to hear the phone ring. The caller is sent straight to voicemail. Then you just have to decide it you really want to check the voicemail. Nah! If it was important they would have called someone else...

I have two separate phone numbers coming in on the same phone, one for business and one for personal, each with their own distinctive ring.

I work from home. I quickly decide what mode (mood) I'm in (either work or play) and decide whether to pick up the call or not or let it go to voicemail. Voila!

We set the phones up in a loop one April Fool's Day - somehow enough of us managed to get in before the receptionist (who we were playing the joke on) to get it done.

The really daft thing is, the phones couldn't actually forward to one another (or if they could, no-one knew how), but they could show messages such as "not at desk, please call nnnn". So she called a number, saw the message, called the next person and so on.

We did take care to make sure it didn't happen to any real calls - well worth the money spent in the phone box over the road (this was before mobile phones were an option!)

I've also "accidentally" disconnected a colleague's call with their manager before now - well, there's no point in looking after the phone system if you can't help the people you work with occasionally (somehow doing IT support meant I was the ideal person to take on the phones, too...)

Unfortunately this was the days before Voice Mail became prevalent and we didn't have it.

Oooh - dumplings would go very nicely with my soup. I've settled for bread roll though

It is now 7:00 AM PST (GMT-0) and I'm late, because I stupidly posted to the wrong thread at my regular 5:30 AM. Too early to negotiate a forum this early in the morning.

We have a home phone with the number known by very few -- family, close friends, and the ever popular automated political caller. The business phone is my cell phone. I started using the cell phone for business when I checked the rate structure of the local telephone company. Cell was less expensive plus I can get all of my voice mail in one place.

One of my clients has a workday (due to time zones) that ends about 5 hours after mine. Good thing I work late at night by choice (I have always been a night owl. My cousin claims it is a family trait.)

In Canada, they have recently launched a do-no-call-list that is government run. Just sign up to the site and register all you phone numbers. T-marketers have to check this list before they make their calls. It is slowly working, I am getting very few calls.

Also, there were exemptions to the list, ie. political parties, charitable organizations, companies whom you have dealt with in the past six months, etc...To get off their list you have to write a personal email.

A smart Prof from the Univeristy of Ottawa has set up a website, where you register, check off some, or all, of the exempt names on the do not call list (that was all 70 boxes for me) and their sytem sends a personal email from me to these exempt organizations. Seems to be working greate.

Also registered with some other advertising organization to get me off their mailing list for junk mail. Noticible decline in junkmail too.
