Ditto (except for the book club). My Fire HD 10 is basically my window onto the world. Many's the night I spent deleting hundreds of spam posts and banning a slew spammers armed with nothing but Coke Zero and my Fire tablet.

Not snobbery...just hate the experience. If it works for you...happy for you. I don’t like it at all.

What I’ve always liked was the reading experience and tv/movie watching experience. Having a memory expansion card and a cheap price point made the Fire Tabs 7 and 8 permanent parts of my travel kit.

This spring I bought the new iPad mini with 256gb storage...so now I have not much use at all for my fire tabs. Except as gifts

I just ordered one, in white. I haven't had a new tablet in 3 or 4 years.

if a faster processor, and fast USB C charging and improved battery life is boring , then yes. it looks exactly like the previous one, and the one before that...

it may surprise you to know that some people buy tablets for features, not for looks

there's nothing else remotely as good as this , at the current black friday price, unless Walmart slash the price of theirs to match.

It's good when companies upgrade the hardware in their tablets. It's called progress and to be applauded. What's not good is when they change the dimensions of the tablet, thereby forcing you to buy a new case. What's up with that? I wanna use my old case on my new tablet. I don't want to spend extra money for another case. That's nonsense and a waste of money.

Because of this flaw, I only buy cheap cases.

Because of this, I don't buy cases. The newer Fire tablets are tough as nails. I dropped mine 3 feet onto concrete where it hit right on a corner. Picked it up, snapped the screen back in where it had come partially out of the back casing and went about my business. I slap a big Fintie velcro square that comes with a relocatable hand-strap on the back and call it a day. My smaller tablet just has a popit stuck to the back of it. Cases are a scam I no longer take part in. I focus on finding accessories to comfortably (and securely) hold my devices. The best medicine to protect devices is to make them very difficult to drop in the first place, IMO.

I want cases to make the tablets holdable. I like the kind that trifold best.

This year I'm skipping on buying a new Fire Tablet. The 10" looks nice and a good black Friday price...but I just don't need a big tablet. I've been thrilled having downsized to the iPad mini.

However, there is one new use case that might make me reconsider. Using a tablet as a second screen. This works great with a Mac and iPad after the new OS versions were released. I know there are third party products that do the same thing and also support windows and android tablets. So a 10" tablet that I can use as a second screen for my Windows laptop...that might make me pull the trigger. Might. Cuz I can do the same on the existing 8" Android tablets I own.

I have a cheap tablet buying sickness

And I'm sad that my iPad mini purchase from this spring has usurped the use cases I used to relegate to my beloved cheap Android tablets (Fire Tab 8 HD, Walmart Onn 8")

i have ordered the 2019 and I am expecting it to fit into the case I saved from the 2017 version which I sold on ebay.

so I for one am glad that it "looks just the same"

i accept that there's a risk that auto sleep may not work properly as amazon seem to reposition the magnets in each generation, but I am cautiously optimistic this time around

its good that they are tough anyway but a case helps keep the actual tablet pristine and thus better suited for an eventual sale / upgrade.

also I can prop it open in landscape mode, with the amazon case, for hands free streaming

PS not sure about the 2nd screen thing. In the other direction amazon firstly restricted casting from fire tablets so that it only worked to other amazon devices like fire TV sticks, then I think they dropped it altogether to lower the cost.
but with google services installed, it may be possible to get an play store app that will let you 2nd screen your PC onto it. That's mostly a function of the PC video card. I did discover, when playing around with Geforce game streaming from NVIdia cards, that you need a GTX card to cast the PC game screen onto something else. The GT1030 that I have in one PC ( for silent operation) does not support it, but the GTX1050ti in my other PC can put a picture onto a big TV across the room, after some faffing about.
Be aware though, that some services block all casting attempts by design e.g. anything that streams Sky TV has casting so locked down that no one on reddit has found any workaround. Sky will not output through any HDMi tablet port either.

That's a good point. I often forget that not everyone has a closet full of all the retired handheld gadgets they've ever owned.

Hm, I'm tempted. My old Fire works and has the old-fashioned layout with the menu.....but it's old, could go out sometime, is heavy, and it doesn't support the digital books I couldn't resist like Dracula in Motion because I'm a dork.

My advice with those old tablets is sell them, give them away before the battery starts to fail.
Unless you are very skillful, replacing a battery is impractical, and sourcing a new but compatible one is not easy
The newer Amazon tablets, those without the carousel, will accept sideloads of Google services and Google play store which makes them more useful all round budget android tablets. You can stack all the unwanted Amazon apps icons into a single folder called Amazon junk, for a tidier home screen, and there are good parental controls for blocking accidental one click Amazon purchases. Those same controls will disable Alexa if you don't want it. We have a useful Amazon echo device that we can shout at, so we don't need Alexa On anywhere else

Yes, there really isn't a reason for me not to upgrade. I joined Scribd for now and apparently my fire is too old for their app now as well. It's also been sluggish/slow for years and the battery has definitely seen better days. Now I just need to decide which one. It's not sometime I use nearly as much as e-ink, so cheaper is fine - thankfully they are all reasonably priced.

just pick a size: HD7,8,10 are all much reduced for next few days and have all improved a lot since your old one. plus you can return it if not impressed.

or if you wait, there will probably be another round of reductions after Xmas
