Well, mainstream writing is an easy category to define: It's whatever doesn't clearly fit any of the classic genres.

If it's neither romance, western, horror, mystery, or SF&F it has to be *something*... Mainstream!

Beyond that, if the prose or metatext is more important than the story, then it's litfic.

I didn't, I thought it was a cheap stupid joke. But then I've worked with AV gear and computers YEARS before that film came out and had read SF before ST-TOS even started.

I loved in a Harry Harrison book where the guys in the invading space fleet show the protagonist an old Star Wars Movie and ask what's wrong with it.
One of a Trilogy, "To the Stars": Homeworld, Wheelworld, and Starworld. I forget which one.
