NYC has the single highest local tax burden in the United States. This is on top of already very high cost of living (rents, etc). So employers have to compensate with higher salaries to attract top talent. And in return, when they can, employers negotiate their own compensating incentives. It is standard practice in a country with 13,000 different local tax regimes. Here's how the tax burden breaks down by state: https://wallethub.com/edu/states-wit...-burden/20494/ Note that Virginia and Tennessee have way lower tax burdens so the "incentives" were lower. The federal government has a system of locality pay adjustment for employees that has a 15% baseline nationally and goes up to a 33% maximum. For NYC. https://www.federalpay.org/gs/locality The thinking of the local politicians I'll forgo because it is pure partisan politics that will derail the thread. (PM me if you want details and links on that.) Let's just say the politicians in question are against capitalism in all its forms and leave it at that. Edit: This link seems innocuous enough. Here is a CNBC article about the politicians involved.
https://www.cnbc.com/2019/02/15/ny-s...azon-deal.html Maloney, ranking member on the Joint Economic Committee on Capitol Hill, said the $3 billion in subsidies for Amazon would have only materialized if the company kept its promises on job creation and other economic development metrics. Just because Amazon left doesn't means there's an extra $3 billion that can be spent elsewhere, she added. "There is no money if Amazon doesn't come to New York. There's not a pile of money." "After seeing the negative reaction to the agreed to plan for building a second partial headquarters in the New York City area by the politicians in the area, the CEO of Amazon, (and it's main decision maker), Jeff Bezos, decides that it would be not in the best interests of the company to site said headquarters in the NYC area. This decision was made by the company, not the city, and the company has no further interest in siting a major complex there and has written off the research and costs involved in the initial search." Semantically about equal, I merely put it in the crude vernacular the first time. . . Amazon press release. "While polls show that 70 percent of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City," Amazon said in the statement Thursday. My apologies, Harry. It's just about impossible to discuss the Amazon withdrawal without going "over the line", due to the nature of the decision making. . .
Therefore I won't discuss it further. |

AOC is NOT the representative for the district in which Amazon intended to build its HQ. Carolyn Maloney is. Maloney supported Amazon; AOC did not.
Polls show that the people in NYC overwhelmingly supported Amazon (58 percent to 35 percent); a handful of politicians with big mouths did not. Notably, the support was strongest among blacks and Hispanics in the city (70 percent and 81 percent respectively). The difference between tax incentives for a corporation that was going to provide 25,000 high-paying jobs and for a sports arena that's presumably going to provide a trickle-down economic boost should be obvious. Amazon should have at least tried to negotiate a bit more instead of just walking away. |

The positive side is that those 25,000 jobs and infrastructure build-up won't be going away. They will just exist elsewhere, not in New York.
This is per New Yorks choice, per their duly elected representatives. I'm fine with that. They can run their city/state any way they want to. I am not happy for New York, nor am I sad for them. Doesn't really affect me at all. The only way it might affect me is if I were considering moving to New York. I would never do that (for other reasons), but if I were considering it, I would take this recent news into consideration. There will be some spill-over from this into the national political discussion. Will it end up being good for liberals? Or good for conservatives? So I guess it will affect me indirectly, since I am governed by national politics. I have my predictions about which political party will benefit from this development and which party will lose out because of it, but I will remain silent regarding my opinions here (as we are supposed to). But wow - do we live in interesting times or what?! |

No, it's not NY's choice; it's Amazon that pulled the plug because they were facing opposition that was loud but limited. They could have tried to ride it out, maybe tweaked the terms of the deal, but instead Amazon walked away.

You could argue it was NY's choice to elect the people who were loudly objecting. But the final choice to pull the plug was Amazon's.
