Android 4.4 Released for all Onyx Books

I rooted 4.4 (the old one) on my T68 & M96. On those I used KingRoot which is different from Kingoroot in spite on the similar name, but similar in that they both want you to click on things.

After Kingroot rooted the devices I used Supersume Pro to remove all traces of Kingroot and convert the root to SuperSu. Unfortunately you need to purchase Supersume as the non-pro one only roots until reboot.

Why Android? just to have more app from Play Store, to complete lack efficiency of software by third party?

Buggy as hell. I installed it two tmes due the first time it was slow as a painfull death. Also started the error mentioned by some users of a crashing systemui, and one ofmy own, a crashing of the bluetooth, which never tried to start it. In this second install it goes more smooth than ever, but still have the same errors from the first try.

I am thinking on try another time to install it, butI am a little afraid... Can some one explain me why sometimes it is installed fine and other times not?

@Booxtor , if it can provide any help to you or erader-store.de, I offer a piece of my time to collect all bugs and problems mentioned due this update for bugfixing


EDIT: I had to reflash the old 4.0.x android due the amount of bugs

Hi all,
I upgraded a while ago to v4.4.4 my N96ML. Most apps works smoothly, without need for any rooting. I got a greater range of installable apps, which does make a difference for some of them, and the phone appears to handle the new OS without any lag.
But, of course there is a "but".

BUT, the front-light is not working. The custom "light setting/button does not work, while it returns back to off after activating it. The android system setting don't have such a setting but any change I dried didn't work. I also installed third party apps that operate the phone lights (e.g. flashlight) but none of them seems doing the job.

Any ideas? it is really annoying

can someone please help me - upgrade of my Max Carta to 4.4 does not work

my device arrived today with firmware 1.8.2

I used MFG tool as described. It runs through different actions and then the buttons turn green and it reports success.

However, if I then restart my Max Carta and check the Android version, it is still 4.0.4 and not 4.4.

Also, if I do NOT use MFG tool and copy update.zip to SD card root folder and do the normal "OTA update" via settings, then everything seems to run through very well. It shows the following text output after reboot

"
finding update package
verifying update package
Installing update
checking update package matching
done package matching
wirting logo
writing boot image
extracting system image
writing system partition
"

Then the system restarts and it is still on 4.0.4 !!!
No error messages...

What is missing in my process? do i need to replace the firmware? If yes, please provide links from where I can get missing resources.

I need 4.4 to run Mendeley. I want to use the device for sheet music PDF and without document management I will not be able to quickly access a piece out of my over 3000 sheet music PDF. Perhaps there is another solution instead of Mendeley - then I appreciate your help. I tried MobileSheetsPro but hand written annotations do not work in its PDF viewer - therefore, I want to use Mendeley that can open PDF files in the Boox Max Carta reader app, which seems to be optimized for pen use.

marssaturn, maybe you did not finished the update? If I remember correctly, the update show some progress then green Success indicator but to close the app you have to confirm (click finish or something... don't remember exactly, the app will tell you). After exiting the MfgTool app ensure you properly eject the usb device from windows.

The 4.4 Android firmware has the top android system bar in white color. In 4.0.4 it was black so you can tell the difference immediately.

I have read that MfgTools can be used to return to 4.0.4. How can I control, whether 4.4 or 4.0.4 is installed by MfgTools ???

I have tried again. Here is exactly what I have done.

1. power off with no USB cable attached
2. press the power button + > + < buttons at the same time for 4 secs until the led flashes
3. connect USB cable
4. start MfgTools2.exe
it shows "HID-konformes, vom Hersteller definiertes Gerät"
and "Hub 3-Port 1"
5. press Start button in MfgTools2 - it runs through several steps
6. buttons in mfgtools turn green - device reboots and starts
device display flashes some times inbetween
this phase takes rather long time
7. rebooted device shows this message
"Connect device to a computer for USB storage?"
There is OK and Cancel - I say "Cancel"
Title bar still black and version number 4.0.4 :-(
8. I click on Stop button in MfgTools, then "Exit"
9. I disconnect device properly from Windows

So, no success - update does not work - readers, please help me.

i checked UPDATE.ZIP for Max Carta from

All files in the ZIP are from 8.8.2013 - so, I assume this is 4.0.4 right ???

Where is the updated UPDATE.ZIP for Max Carta ?

I now see, there are TWO update.zip published on the site:

"Update File Max Carta 1.8.2"

AND

"Update File V1.8.2 MAX"

Both contain only files from 2013 - something is wrong here, right?

at least, I understand this now - one for the old MAX and another for the new MAX CARTA - but the latter does not work for me; cannot get 4.4 onto my Max Carta.

Anybody out there, who got 4.4 onto a MAX CARTA 1.8.2 with 4.0.4 using these files ?

The problem is most likely because of not compatible hardware. Since you bought your device on Ebay from the quite suspicious seller (the seller is not an agent of Onyx), it could be either fake goods or a stolen and smuggled part of big batch build for Chinese educational department (otherwise we cannot explain its price, which is quite lower than import (wholesale) price of Onyx agents). The software, provided on our website is for international versions of Onyx devices only and will most likely be not installable on other hardware versions.

Did you install latest upgrade version? I have tested it on my sample N96ML - everything is working as expected.
