Tests I'd like to see done:

- Let the device auto sleep and not close the cover.
- Let the device auto sleep and then close the cover.
- Use another magnet to get the device to sleep and then close the cover.

What I am thinking of is that there was a problem a while ago where some covers had something that would touch the screen of the device as they closed. This interfered with the sleep in some way. It would appear to sleep, but power was being used.

With the Aura ONE, the cover is touching the screen. Something like the above could be happening and triggering something that is preventing the device from sleeping properly.
After doing what you suggested. I have found if the WI-FI is turned on the KA1 power drains super fast.

How fast is "super fast"? Drains the battery in an hour? Two hours? How long? What if there is no known WiFi network? While this is happening, does the activity icon in the top bar show? Or the sync tile or menu item show activity?

Then the Aura One starts thinking it has an empty database. The calibre KoboTouch driver will report that the database is corrupt. At that point no amount of connecting USB/mounting/dismounting would trigger a refresh. This can be solved by rebooting, then mounting/dismounting, which finally refreshes. However, this database "loss" happens quite a lot. At one point I did not do the reboot+refresh thing and Nickel eventually did a spontaneous factory reset.
That all sounds "normal" for when something has messed up the database. If it is bad enough, then nickel will decide to cut it's losses and reset.

Could it be an issue with fmon?

Sorry, I don't use fmon, so I am not sure. Removing it and checking would be a good idea.

Do you use KSM? The description reminds me of a problem KSM had a while ago. I'm sure the problem was fixed, but if you have an old version of KSM, it might still be happening.

Something you should try is to take calibre out of it. Connect without calibre running and manually sideload a book. If that works, then it isn't the connection to the MAC. Then using the Kobo desktop while manually sideloading a book. Or changing something in the database by some other mechanism. This would help demonstrate if it is the database being change by something other than nickel and it is not being reloaded properly when the device is disconnected.

The little activity icon is always going. And I have all known networks added from my home to my phone.

As long as it's off I'm good.. and since I don't need to use wifi all the time it's Only turned on as needed and only for as long as needed.

Davidfor; if you remember a lot of the corruption was caused by 3rd party Kobo add-ons installed that kept files open and prevented the partition being demounted on the device.

Pickaxe; what mods / add-ons have you added to your Kobo?

KSM is the only one I remembered doing it. I checked later and that was happening late last year. Hopefully that version isn't still being used by anyone.

"fmon" was mentioned. My vague memory of how it works suggest it won't be the culprit. But, a proper test would be to remove it and see what happens.

Just fmon and koreader. I love fmon for being so minimalistic.

I will remove fmon and switch to KSM, then I'll report if there's a difference.

Thanks for the help guys.

Since you prefer the minimalistic approach, you could try the Kute File Monitor. Alternatively, you could keep fmon, but you have to make sure the executable file is not located on the user partition.

1. Your device can wake up while sleeping so some battery drain is normal. Disabling WiFi and auto-sync helps with this.

2. That drop would be normal. The battery life is approximately 15 hours (1 month at 30 minutes per day) so I'd expect in the 6-7% per hour battery usage. This would depend on how often you flip pages since little energy is used while displaying a static page.

Have they actually rolled out this update to everyone now? It seems like it's worked anyhow (for most at least), since it came out there seems to be less people having problems.

This is slightly off topic but does anyone think Kobo will continue updates for the older devices? Personally I don't think they will. I'm not sure other than bug fixes there's anything more they can / need or want to do.

Only Kobo know the answer to that. What I do know is that in firmware 4.1.7729 (only released for 2016 models so far), the part (nickel file) which handles a lot of the GUI layout has thousands of lines of code which test for specific Kobo model before deciding what value to use for various widgets measured in pixels, e.g. size of boxes, fonts, thumbnails etc.

The models referenced range from codename "Trilogy" through to "Daylight" including all codenames in between ("Pika", "Phoenix", "Dragon", "Alyssum"). I think "Trilogy" is the original Kobo Touch (someone will correct me if I'm wrong). "Daylight" is the AuraONE.

There's no guarantee what this means for the future but there is no sign in the latest firmware that older models are being excluded.

I don't know, but it should be out to everyone by now.

Yes, Kobo will be continuing to update the older devices. I would have expected an update by now, but I think they've been concentrating on fixing the problems with the Aura ONE and that has delayed the more general release. It is possible they might stop updating some devices. The original Touch is the obvious candidate, but I don't think that will happen yet.
