Amazon is very stingy with information about their plans for the future of kindle books. One message included in the kindle for android app is:
Quote:
While Kindle now features Page Flip to help you move through your book more quickly, not all books are able to take advantage of these improvements.

We're working hard to bring support for enhanced navigation to all Kindle books, and plan to update your book when available.
I am trying to read between the lines and guess what this really means. I think it is likely one of the following:
  • It only works on some books, so don't bother us if you don't see it in your book.
  • It only works for Enhanced Typesetting (KFX) books now, but we plan to support more formats in the future.
  • It only works for Enhanced Typesetting (KFX) books and we plan to convert all books to that format eventually.

Is there any way to check your progress in a book without engaging Page Flip (in iOS app)? I'd just like to know how far along I am without seeing all the pages. I'm not against Page Flip, but don't need to see it all the time.

To me it is a clear improvement: you can actually look before you leap. Before, you had to trust that the little dot on the progress bar was where you wanted to navigate to, and these 'previous location' indicators could be too close for a tap to resolve which you wanted.

If you tap the very bottom of the screen it will cycle through the various progress indicators, such as page number (if available for that book) and time left to read. Did you want something more?

Also, the bottom right of the display shows the percentage you have completed in the book.

Is there some way to inset this feature in external books without buying or downloading them from amazon?

No, there isn't. You can of course still use the older page flip facility. Do you find that to be inadequate for your needs?

Love the video and also how they show the feature on an LCD tablet because the feature is nowhere near book-like on eink (but it does quite a bit to enhance navigation in many instances)... Really looking forward to a prospective Liquavista device

If you meant that faction which use one page for scrolling, so in that case I think old page flip is'nt so effective and speedy stuff than new one

Thanks--that's just what I wanted. I wasn't tapping "low" enough.

The new page flip feature only works for books in KFX format. I created a calibre plugin that can convert books to this format for sideloading, but it doesn't work reliably.

That is good to know, thanks for sharing.
I still wish Amazon would start converting all Personal Documents to .kfx (or at least convert to that format from now on).

So you want Amazon to put all personal documents in a format that only certain devices can read.
Not everyone has a PW3, Voyage or Oasis.
The idea of the cloud is so a person can access their documents on whatever device they are on. Just because one person uses it ONLY for books does not mean everyone else does.
But yes by all means let's change excel and pictures to kfx. Let's just make the documents unaccessible to most people because a few people want a certain format for their expensive device. Because I am sure the few buy enough to keep Amazon going.

Since Amazon already converts books uploaded by publishers into kfx format for the devices that can handle it, logically it seems that they could do the same thing for personal documents. I doubt that will ever happen because it is in Amazon's interest to have the best reading experience tied to books purchased from them.

Delivering the best format to devices that can handle that format does not preclude users of older devices from using the service with an older format if still available. Case in point: dual-mobis appear as azw3-type files on Kindles from at least KTouch onward, but download to Kindle 1 and 2 as regular old mobis.
There is absolutely no technological limit to holding kfx files in readiness for those devices that can handle them. On another note: PDFs, .docs and other files are already changed from their original formatting (optional for PDFs) and converted into Kindle-readable files.
I really do not get why you would find that ridiculous.

Obviously we have a misunderstanding.
I read that you want Amazon to convert all personal documents to KFX format.
I read that as all documents would only be available in KFX.
I wouldn't want Amazon converting my personal documents to a different format without my approval.

Now if you meant you would like the ability to store your personal documents in kfx format that makes more sense.
I never said it was ridiculous but you said ALL PERSONAL DOCUMENTS. That made no sense to me.

I read your post literally.
