I also like the park ride where they haul everyone up a tower and then drop you. First time I tried that one, I was in a lousy mood (caught it from the Grumpy Teenager), and it just flew right out of me. Great experience.

I'm a polar opposite on the roller coasters. I love the rickety old fashioned ones that sway back and forth when you go around the corners. It's exciting when there is a bit of play to it and you wonder if this is the time it will fall over. The steel tube tracks are just too darn stable. They can loop me upside down and run them 3 times as fast but it's still not as thrilling as the old wooden rides.

Sorry, but if I want to go into space, I want to go in something that is not a Virgin. I want something with experience; something that knows its way around explosive thrust and re-entry. Now put "Apollo" there, and there's a lap of the Gods I can ride.

it's nice to fly..If i have given a chance to fly then why should I decline? it's the greatest experienced ever in your life.I would not be afraid of flying..lol

A phobia is NOT a laughing matter. Unless you've experienced it yourself, you have no idea just how horrible it is. You are being VERY insensitive in "laughing" about it.

I don't think any insensitivity was intended.

Phobias are horrible for people who have them; but that doesn't mean they can't see how others might think them strange.

You'd have to think twice before saying anything if you were to be properly 'sensitive' to all possible phobias.

Certainly people can think them "strange", but to laugh at someone for being afraid of something is a different matter entirely - that's just being cruel (IMHO). The whole point about a phobia is that it is an irrational fear. If you are afraid of flying, or of spiders, or of Daleks, or of whatever else it might be, saying "there's nothing to be afraid of" is useless to the person involved. They probably know that as well as you do, but it doesn't help with the phobia one jot. I speak from personal experience of that, unfortunately.

Yes, but other people aren't obliged to 'help with the phobia' - the poster asked why they should be afraid to fly - a reasonable question imho.
I thought the laughing smiley was just a mood lightener, rather than an attempt at ridicule.

Why assume the worst of people?

Well I'm afraid that it struck me as being a little insensitive. Perhaps, however, I am being "over-sensitive", in which case I apologise, but phobias really aren't a laughing matter.

i agree with sparrow, i think that was just trying to keep things light spirited. many of us have been poking fun at our own experiences in this thread.

i have phobias too (spiders and dead shrimp) and am subjected to plenty of good-natured ridicule as a result. i can see the humor in it : look at the size of me, compared to a spider ! i could take one, or even several at a time, easily, if i could just bring myself to stop climbing on furniture to escape from them while shrieking like a girl (actually, i don't really shriek, but i would, if i were that kind of girl) (and yes, i can see the ridicule in that too).

the only thing i didn't find funny was the special delivery of a box of spiders and mixed crustaceans that arrived on my doorstep (you know who you are). luckily i was able to use the "matter transporter" mode on my death ray to return it illico to sender. of course, every time i feel something unexpextedly brush my arm i still jump out of my chair, but it's usually just a cat (or a mosquito, in which case i use the "pulverise into individual atoms and send directly to hell" setting on my deathray).

phobias aren't funny when you're confronted with the object of them, i agree, but it can help to laugh about them the rest of the time.

I'm reminded of a routine from SNL, maybe. Maybe not... that's not the point. Bob Newhart as a therapist who's only therapeutic measure was to yell "Stop it!" at his patients.
