And that is the thing that is not clear to me in any way. Favorites can ring the phone, but can they cause sound notifications for their text messages and email? Seems to me that would be the logical way for it to work, but Apple is not always logical. If you allow calls to ring, why wouldn't you allow sound notifications from these contacts as well? Seems to me that allowing Favorites to override Do Not Disturb should allow all types of contact from those contacts. Why on earth would you want to allow the ringer for calls but block sound notifications from the same contacts when they text or email you? Questions are directed at Apple, BTW.
I agree. It may not be logical, but I don't think it's a bug. If you look at the language within the settings it says "allow calls from" whereas elsewhere in the settings it specifies "calls and alerts." They should allow the option to select whether you want to allow calls, alerts, or "calls and alerts."

I agree. Since I rely much more heavily on email and texting than phone calls, that would be a good thing for Apple to add. For now I have cut back the Do Not Disturb time to the overnight hours only. I think I will assign a loud phone ring to all my Favorites and a quiet ring to all others so that they don't annoy me as much. I truly wish Apple would get beyond the aesthetics first BS and start paying more attention to the feature sets users want and need.

Just FYI:

To help with all the annoying telemarketing calls I've been getting, I took the following steps on my iPhone.
  • In Settings --> Sounds I assigned a very soft, weak ring as the default for incoming phone calls. I used Chimes because I can barely hear it.
  • For each nuisance call I get, in Phone --> Recents I assign the phone number to my Ignore contact wherein I set the ring tone to Silent and the vibrations and tone for text to None. (To add a caller number to Ignore press the Info icon, an "i" inside of a circle, on the right side of the entry line.)
  • In Phone --> Favorites I set up a Favorites list which contains any contact from which I will accept calls.
  • I assigned each Favorites list contact a loud ring such as Old Phone.

Now when I get a new unwanted call the phone is barely heard when ringing. My acceptable calls have a loud ring. My Ignore calls are totally silent. So far this method seems to be working, though rather kluge to set up. It would be better if Apple would simply give us some phone options like Silence All Unknown Calls.

You cannot block first time unknown callers. There is no such option for the first time they call. You have to wait until they call then block them from future calls by placing them in an Ignore contact. If we had an option like Block All Unknown Callers then that would be nice, but we don't.

Right. I usually have my sound off and rely only on vibration. I don't get many calls and most people ring my landline because I am mostly housebound.
