But there's millions of free books I've never read seconds away from eyes, too. And I can't remember the last time I had no network coverage (at the same time I was ready for a new book anyway).

I understand wanting/liking to re-read books. But having to re-read isn't something someone with an ereader and an internet connection can realistically claim anymore. Which is why my re-reading stopped almost completely when I bought into ereading. I've just never found myself "in between books" since.
Would you like to join me in Kent, Tx?

Why? Is it more remote and technically challenged than the village of 4,800 I live in rural Ohio?

Kent, Tx has two closed buildings. So yes very remote. It is on Interstate 10 at the McDonald Observatory cutoff.
No cell, no wifi, no fuel, no food. And that is for at least 40 miles in any direction.

And yet you post here rather prolifically lately. So I'm not sure about the relevance of that remoteness with regard to ebook access and connectivity in general. If you have a reading device and a connection to the internet you have ebooks to read that you've never read before.

You had commented you didn't know the last time, you were without a network. I was just pointing out that less than 2 hours from me, there is no network of any kind.
So it is possible to go on vacation and not be able to get new books.
Or there are power outages. Or places that do not carry your network.

Part of me is inclined to agree, if you know you will be disconnected stock up before leaving the house. But the last time, I was disconnected I didn't know the area was Verizon free.

I suggest that combustion is quite a lot quicker than ingestion or decomposition.

Burning books that you object to the ideology of is never justifiable, IMHO. That's been done too often in the past to try to suppress ideas, and it's never worked.

OFFS. You can burn your own damn copy of a book whenever or however you like (within local fire regulations of course). You can also make interesting paper-cut art with it, wipe your bum, or make the pages into teeny-tiny paper planes. It's not like Atlas Shrugged is going to disappear off the face of the earth.

Groan. Does it always have to be Shakespeare when fanboys like a writer?

Don't get me wrong. I'm a great admirer of Pratchett's, and - contrary to Harry - I've re-read some of his books, while I don't intend ever to re-read LOTR (once was nice, but totally sufficient for me).

I also think that Pratchett is a lot deeper than some seem to give him credit for. He has a way of raising philosophical and moral questions that can really make you think if you are so inclined. He is also very funny. But all his books follow the same formula, and once you've read a few, you usually know what to expect. It's genre fiction, even if Pratchett created his own genre. It's as great as genre fiction gets, and that is much greater than a lot of Literature with a capital L, but it ain't Shakespeare. Srsly.

Religion is a good place for it then, if you are relevantly religious then it's non-fiction, if you're an atheist (or differently religious) then it's fiction, it's a great little Schrodinger's cat of a category that will depend on the person looking at the shelf to determine which books in the section are fiction and which non-fiction.

With that argument Austen seems to me to be genre fiction also.

One could put her books in the "Romance" genre, certainly, although they're about as far as you can possibly get from the typical "Mills and Boone" romance in terms of the sophistication of the writing.
