Professional curiosity: how will this column be populated when it will be added to the database? Can we expect a small delay in this install?

No new tweak. The value written to the series table will respect the existing tweak affecting in-library sorting.

No, the first_author and first_author_sort pseudo-fields won't be added to calibre's template language. You can achieve the same thing (and more) using the sublist function.

If you are asking about the next calibre install, then yes there will be a small delay after the upgrade. The 'sort' column is already in the series table in metadata.db and has been there for years, so there is no 'alter table' cost. Today that column is populated using triggers that copy the series value unchanged. The new install changes those triggers to copy the value after being processed by the 'generate sort' function that has also been in the database for years, so there is no incompatibility risk in downgrading calibre after an upgrade. The small delay the first time calibre is run after the upgrade is caused by correcting the existing sort values. That delay is proportional to the number of unique series values (not number of books), taking probably around a second per thousand unique values.

If you mean CC then no, there is no database change. The column is already there and populated. The only change to CC is that the correct value will be available in the cloud connection.

I have found what I think is a small bug in the cloud connection "show first letter" settings. I prefer not to have A B C D for the basic sort and the cloud settings say you get the author names or series etc listing if you fill in a value of 0. But if you do that ABCD IS what you get.
I have now set the value to a 1000 and then it works, so it's not a big deal, but it may be one for the todo list :-)

Hello. I have a question about accessing books on an SD card. I can only access them if I have a wifi connection. Is that by design? I have a Nook HD and I don't always have a wifi connection.

I assume that you have a calibre library on an SD card and that you are trying to use the "Library on device" cloud provider.

It is a bug that CC asks for a wifi connection before allowing the local library connection to run. Unfortunately fixing it isn't straight forward, but I will work on it.

You can work around the problem by checking the "Allow connecting using 3G" box in the cloud connection settings. If that box is checked then CC does not check for networking until it needs it, which it won't if you are using the local provider.

I copied my Calibre library folder to the SD card, so it is a full library. And thank you for that solution of checking "Allow connecting using 3G". That worked beautifully.

Ok, another "Is that by design?" question: When I access the books on my SD card and download them to CC, it doesn't reference the book in its existing location. It copies the downloaded book to the root Calibre library folder so I wind up with 2 copies of the book: one in its original author folder and one at the same level as the author folder under my root library folder.

Is that by design?

Yes, this is by design and won't change. CC's library can be filled from any of the wireless device, content server, or cloud connection; where the local library is a type of cloud connection. Once a book is added to the library it can be used regardless of whether the connection is still there. Its metadata can be updated using the wireless device connection, and so on.

As for where the books end up after the copy, that is under the control of CC's Formats & Folders settings. I strongly recommend that you not use the original calibre library as the CC folder, because copying a new library will (probably) erase CC's books and because using the wireless device connection will probably scan the entire calibre library.

If you are using only the local library connection and you use some sync program to keep it up-to-date then I suggest you fetch any books you want to read, read them, then delete them from CC's library.
