Yep, thanks ApK. Everyone seems to be looking at the copyright aspect in isolation. This is all happening in a much wider context and other laws will (or should) continue to apply.

I dot believe that you can still buy 'Official' parts and install them yourself.

What they have done is circumvented the law that previously allowed 'knock-off' replacements. (Not an exact copy)

What is now being blocked is the extended Diagnostic tools. (California Emissions law REQUIRES that the diagnostic port interface correctly with emissions testing equipment. So basic info is still available)

The manufacturers are trying to frame this as a safety issue. It is not. Automobiles have been modified way beyond the manufacturer's spec for as long as there has been automobiles. Anytime I see an argument based on Fear I give it extra inspection. Fear is the default way to motivate people nowadays and I am very tired of it. It is easy enough to outlaw actually dangerous modifications without blocking all access. There is a financial profiteering motive behind this not a safety one.

I'm waiting for the manufacturers to start embedding chips into everything as an 'anti-theft' mechanism.
