As for Google, they are real competition to Amazon given that Google price matches most of the time and sometimes even has lower pricing.
Walmart has been pretty good at pushing nook hardware for years. I bought my first nook e-ink device there. They have the web presence to handle the bookstore if they wanted to. They have done an awesome job with video via Vudu.
Google appeared to be all in with books with scanning so many titles from various libraries, but their reading software is unimpressive. No way to put ebooks in collections or manage ebooks in any way. No way to search for uploaded ebooks--and they are a search giant. Just sad.

Google has also done nothing about pirated copies that are loaded up there. Well, they will take them down IF an author sends a DMCA notice enough times or the publisher does, but then the pirated books go right back up. This is not an impressive way to build their brand or reliability.

That said, they do sell books and they are an alternative for epubs. I do buy most of my epubs from kobobooks, but my second choice is Google.
