And Bookeen is shipping it (well, actually a NEW unit) back to me. Seems the display *WAS* broken.

I also have noticed the "double click" on the enter button. For example, when I click on a word to look up (which is when it happens most often), it goes to the word and back to the menu list, which is irritating. Not every time, but often. I've been trying to develop a light touch on the button, to see if that helps. The energy drain is fixed (whew!) though, so that's good.

The energy drain is not fixed. In library mode you get around 6 days with 538 and 3 days with 708.

Firmware 708 at 70% went blank at a certain moment. Charged the Cybook for 1 minute and checked the percentage: showed 80%, dropping to 70% immediately.

I have no explanation that it DIED while at 70%.

Happened today for the first time, never before. Most befuddled.

Hey precisely this happened to me yesterday (also with FW 708)... battery was at 70%, but actually it was on 70% for some days already, so maybe the prtiodic battery status checks died at some time. Then yesterday the Cybook froze at startup, and the reset button didn't work... just as if the battery was down. I thought strange, it just was at 70% before. But I did connect power for a minute (a shame btw that you can't read while charging), and then it came up fine, showing still 70% though (should be at most 10% if it was really down before). After a complete recharge it's now again on 100%.

The battery meter is really inaccurate until you've cycled the battery once or twice and it's had a chance to properly calibrate itself.

The reset button never "works".

I mean, it doesn't have any visual effect on the screen. The reset button turns the processor (and the LED) off, but the screen will keep the same state and image because, you know, it's an e-ink screen. In order to see any effect, you have to turn the Cybook on after using the reset button.

Last night I started reading, with the battery level indicated at 90%, 5 page turns later my Cybook was dead...

That got me thinking, the original spec for the reader (firmware 538)was that the battery was good for 8000 page flips.

Checking the books I've recently read, and those I can remember reading since my last charge, I estimate I have had fewer than 4000 page flips on one charge...(firmware 708).

The "8000 page turns" is pure marketing hype. It would achieve it if you started with a fully-charged battery, then turned the page as fast as it would go until the battery was flat. In reality, your machine is sitting there "idle" most of the time as you read what's on the page, and that "idle time" is still using power for the CPU and memory. That's what drains the extra battery power.

And that would be necessary after every firmware upgrade?

If the firmware update changes the power characteristics of the device, it would probably be a good idea to let the battery drain totally through usage to calibrate the battery meter - if you're bothered about using the meter.

I keep my battery fully charged by connecting the Gen3 to my PC for a few minutes every day, so my battery meter generally stays on "100%". I'm sure it would be horribly inaccurate if I were to let it drain more!

Oh no, Harry. Surely Bookeen didn't lie to us just to sell the Cybook.

Anyway, I still like mine regardless of the number of page flips.

Actually my batteries were already cycled down twice or three times... but yes, this was still with an older firmware.

I wouldn't mind doing that - but I fear this would break the batteries earlier. As far as I know about LiIon batteries, each charging cycle counts, no matter whether it's a complete or a partial one, and after a certain number of cycles, the batteries slowly die. Of course the batteries can be easily replaced, but I don't know whether the Cybook batteries are of any standard type or not (anyone?).

Don't worry. the number of cycles is somewere between 300 and 1000. Lets be conservative and say 500. But than the battery is not dead, it is at 50%. So if a battery charge lasts for 4 day's, the total number of days you can use the battery is 2000. That is over 5 years, and then it still keeps the Cybook alive for about 2 days. And there is an other thing about these type of batteries...They slowly die anyway. Even if you store them in a closet. Almost none of them surives 4 years. So the best thing you can do is use them. Age will kill them faster than use

The story is different for a laptop. There you exhaust your battery in a couple of hours and in an extremely 'unfriendly' way with high currents. You can cycle 3 times in a day. Here use is worse than age
