My attention has been drawn to the mistake, Culloden being in Scotland so it was in fact the last battle on British soil.

The last pitched battle on English soil was probably the battle of Sedgemoor fought in 1685, which was the decisive battle in Monmouth's Rebellion.

I missed that. The book itself didn't interest me, so I just copied & pasted the blurb without actually reading it first

The Years of Victory: 1802-1812 by Arthur Bryant

I bought and read the hardback of this some years ago. It was written during WWII, but a quick glance at the sample suggests that it isn't riddled with OCR errors like so many old books that are turned into ebooks.

Britain's first global war...as told by Britain's first great popular historian

In all of England’s great wars, it is the years of victory which always follow the years of endurance.

In this second volume of Arthur Bryant’s saga of the epic struggle between England and France from 1793-1814, the story continues, starting with the short-lived and unreal peace of Amiens, and hurtling to the glories of the Peninsular Wars – via Wellington, Nelson and Sir John Moore.

Bryant paints a vital and memorable picture of the Britain of a hundred and eighty years ago.

He highlights the similarities of that age with the Britain of 1939-45: a Britain startled by threats of invasion, grimly preparing to face the worst, stolidly refusing to accept a tyrannical New Order in Europe, and then attacking again and again by land and sea.

“The strongest aspect of his latest work is his grasp of the whole European and world situation. Arthur Bryant is a learned scholar who knows how to use his learning and scholarship for the general good.” - Observer

“Arthur Bryant belongs to the grand tradition of readable English historians. Like Macaulay, he has the gift of making the record of past events continuously moving and exciting. His prose style is simple, energetic, and, where necessary, eloquent. His new book is a masterly achievement. The narrative of Years of Victory is full of fascinating detail.” - Daily Mail

“Readers of this outstanding book, the work of the ablest of our younger historians, will discover that Arthur Bryant, writing for the ordinary man, has accomplished his formidable task supremely well. The miniature pen-portraits are aglow with life. Interest is sustained in every chapter. The author seems incapable of committing the sin that so easily besets the historian, that of dullness.” - Times Educational Supplement

Sir Arthur Bryant was one of the leading British historians of the 1930s to the 1960s. He was the favourite historian of both Sir Winston Churchill and Clement Atlee. He wrote over forty books overall, which collectively sold over two million copies. Sir Harold Wilson, who regarded him as the leading British historian of his age, knighted him for his contribution to public life.

The Great War at Sea: 1914 - 1918
Richard Hough
99 cents

blurb:
Quote:
The history of the First World War is dominated by the monumental battles of Northern France

But the Great War was fought at sea as well as on land.

And it witnessed the greatest naval battle of all time.

In 'The Great War At Sea: 1914-1918', the historian Richard Hough tells the story of those naval battles and how they shaped the eventual outcome of the war.

It is a history as much of men as of ships; men like Sir John Jellicoe, 'Jacky' Fisher, and Winston Churchill, who together succeeded in jolting the Royal Navy out of its nineteenth-century complacency.

The narrative follows the race to war, including the construction of the Dreadnought, the biggest, fastest, most heavily gunned battleship in the world; and against the backdrop of feuds, scheming, and personality clashes at the Admiralty, examines the triumphs and tragedies of the great battles and campaigns.

Could the appalling losses have been avoided during the Dardanelles?

Was there 'something wrong with our bloody ships' as David Beatty said at Jutland?

Why was the Battle of Jutland inconclusive?

The Secret History by Procopius

The foundation of hundreds of historical novels of the Eastern Roman Empire.

Truth ? Accuracy ? who knows
==
Procopius, holding a position in a period of transition between classical Greek and Byzantine literature, is the first and most talented of Byzantine historians. His writings are characterized by an energetic combination of the Attic models of the affected, but often picturesque style employed by the Byzantine writers. Although he is not free from errors of taste, he expresses his ideas with great vigour, and his thoughts are often worthy of a better age. The information which he has given us is exceedingly valuable. He had ample opportunities of observation, and his works present us with the best picture of the reign of Justinian, so important in Greco-Roman annals.

Old Indian Legends by Zitkala-Sa

Zitkala-Sa was a 19th century Sioux author and activist. Old Indian Legends is a collection of Native American tales you compiled during trips to various reservations.
A table of contents is included.
About the Author
Gertrude Simmons Bonnin (February 22, 1876 - January 26, 1938), better known by her pen name, Zitkala-Sa, was a Native American writer, editor, musician, teacher and political activist. She was born and raised on the Yankton Sioux Reservation in South Dakota by her mother, Ellen Simmons, whose Yankton-Nakota name was Tate Iyohiwin (Every Wind or Reaches for the Wind). Zitkala-Sa lived a traditional lifestyle until the age of eight when she left her reservation to attend Whites Manual Labor Institute, a Quaker mission school in Wabash, Indiana. She went on to study for a time at Earlham College in Indiana and the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston. A considerable talent, Bonnin co-composed the first American Indian grand opera, The Sun Dance (composed in romantic style based on Ute and Sioux themes), in 1913. After working as a teacher at Carlisle Indian Industrial School, she moved to Boston and began publishing short stories and autobiographical vignettes. Her autobiographical writings were serialized in Atlantic Monthly from January to March of 1900 and, later, published in a collection called American Indian Stories in 1921. Her first book, Old Indian Legends, is a collection of folktales that she gathered during her visits home to the Yankton Reservation. Much of early scholarship on her life comes from American Indian Stories and, more recently, from Doreen Rappaport's biography titled The Flight of Red Bird. For other reliable scholarship, see the work of P. Jane Hafen.

Thanks for the post. Seems like a great book and at a fantastic price!

For those of us in the U.S., we can replace the "ca" in the above URL with a "com" to get the book: http://www.amazon.com/Fifties-David-...ds=The+Fifties. It is $1.99, USD, for us also.

It's an Open Road Media book, so it's couponable @ Kobo (same $1.99 in Canada) and should be price-matched to most of the stores if you've a shopping preference.

Different server switchover times. iTunes seems to go at 8 PM Pacific Time, so you can check if something is a 1-day deal or not by looking there.

Kobo fluctuates between 8 and 9 PM, so if you're quick and careful, you can actually add something which started out the day as $1.99 but currently says $10.09 when you look at the listings, to the cart and once you click to start the checkout, see it shown as still $1.99, apply the coupon, watch it discount to $1.25, and checkout. I've done this in the past (and today, just now, with this very title) with success.

But I advise you to take a screenshot of your cart price right before and during the click-to-purchase while the little "processing" wheel is still spinning and check the amount on the "We just charged you $ and added this title to your library" confirmation screen, just in case.

Laughs, Luck...and Lucy: How I Came to Create the Most Popular Sitcom of All Time (with "I LOVE LUCY's Lost Scenes" and rare Lucille Ball audio) [Kindle Edition]

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B...cm_cd_asin_lnk

Jess Oppenheimer, the man Lucille Ball called the "brains" of "I Love Lucy", gives us a rare first-hand look at television history as it was being made. A rich entertainment resource, "Laughs, Luck…and Lucy" features a hilarious memoir, and scores of rare photos, three never-before-published scripts (including the only "I Love Lucy" script that Lucy or Desi ever refused to perform), plus links to web-based audio of Lucy's classic radio comedy performances, unheard for more than 40 years! Oppenheimer's book, written with his son, Gregg, is not only a reliable record of how "I Love Lucy" was conceived an executed, but also a humorous insider's account of the broadcasting industry's development from the wild early days of radio to television's "golden age."

The 2nd Kindle Edition (2012) now contains the full script of Gregg Oppenheimer's humorous play, "I Love Lucy: The Untold Story", broadcast nationwide on SiriusXM Radio on Lucille Ball's 100th birthday in 2011.
