Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time
by Dava Sobel

is today's Nook Daily Find. It can be downloaded for $1.99.

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/long...=9780802779434

Below is the blurb:
Anyone alive in the eighteenth century would have known that "the longitude problem" was the thorniest scientific dilemma of the day--and had been for centuries. Lacking the ability to measure their longitude, sailors throughout the great ages of exploration had been literally lost at sea as soon as they lost sight of land. Thousands of lives and the increasing fortunes of nations hung on a resolution. One man, John Harrison, in complete opposition to the scientific community, dared to imagine a mechanical solution--a clock that would keep precise time at sea, something no clock had ever been able to do on land. Longitude is the dramatic human story of an epic scientific quest and of Harrison's forty-year obsession with building his perfect timekeeper, known today as the chronometer. Full of heroism and chicanery, it is also a fascinating brief history of astronomy, navigation, and clockmaking, and opens a new window on our world.

The building codes here won't allow it. We're prone to earthquakes, hurricanes (cyclones), tornadoes, wild fires, sinkholes, and maybe some other things that I've forgotten.

Kindle Parenting Freebie

I ran across this one yesterday, but didn't have time to post it (I really need to get my priorities straight. haha). It was free then and is free now, but I don't know how long that it will stay that way.

This really looks like a good one, from the preview. It's filled with a lot of good, "common" sense. As it is so many times with common sense, it's often not so common and has to be taught.

I just wish the title had been longer . . . .

Parenting: 50 Tips on Building Your Child's Self Esteem -Raising Girls, Boys, Potty Training Toddlers or Teenagers- Psychology & Child Development Book on Raising Children-Raising Kids with Confidence. By Jenny Loveless; Jean Oggins (editor). Four and 1/2 stars from 26 reviews at the present moment. Digital list price $4.99; Kindle price now $0.00. http://www.amazon.com/Parenting-Teen...ith+Confidence.

Now this best selling parenting book in 7 categories comes with 10 extra tips on boosting your child's sense of self-worth. That's a total of 60 awesome tips!

Have you been looking for tips on building your child’s self esteem just to find the same tips over and over again?Well Look no further. Jenny Loveless has found fifty (now 60) of the best and useful tips and consolidated them all for you right here in this book!

Fifty Tips on Raising Your Child’s Self Esteem is an easy to read guide with great tips from experts on children. It has a funny sarcastic twist from a mom’s point of view, who at times feels she is going to lose her mind herself. This book gives great explanations for each tip and many examples on how to use them. Not to mention, there are now 60 of them! If you don’t like one of the tips, you have 59 more to choose from.

Raising kids is hard work. We could all use some help sometimes. Author Jenny Loveless has done her research. As she searched the internet, she found hundreds of websites on building self-esteem in children. But they all had between 3 and 12 tips on them which are repeated over and over again. Are you kidding? That’s all we get? There are hundreds, or even thousands of tips we could implement to boost our children’s confidence. Where the bleep are they?

There are many parenting books on this subject, but how many of them are written honestly, by real parents? The tips in those books are all true, but they make you feel as though you’re sitting in a therapist’s office and he is telling you everything you’re doing wrong! We don't need that. We already know everything we are doing wrong!

Finding these tips can be very time consuming. Honestly, who the hell has time for all that? Let’s cut to the chase. Instead of spending all your time searching, spend your time putting these tips into action. Just because we sometimes feel like crap doesn't mean our kids have to.

Jenny Loveless has researched tons of tips from Child Psychologists, teachers, therapists, Daycare providers, Doctors and other professionals. She has stolen their tips and made them available to you in this quick and fun, easy to read guide.

Jenny Loveless has three girls of her own, and she can tell you that raising girls is tough. But whether you're raising girls or raising boys, the information in this book can work for your child. Jenny was learning as well while she was researching for this book. Before publishing, she has experimented by implementing many of these tips and has found them to be very useful herself.

If your child already has low self esteem, implementing the tips in this book will help to raise your child’s self image in no time. Follow the examples, and if something doesn’t work for your child, move on and focus on another. Raising a child is exhausting and confusing at times. Well....okay, all the time. But you don’t have to do it alone. The more you know, the easier it will be.

In this book you will learn:
-Ways to build your patience with your child
-How to gain respect as an authority figure
-Examples on phrases to help boost your child’s self esteem
-It’s okay, parenting mistakes happen
-Psychology tricks to help boost your child’s confidence
-Ideas to keep focused on your child’s emotional needs
-What you can do for yourself to help with your child’s self esteem
-Personal tips from a real mother
-Examples on what not to say and do while raising your child
-Tips on learning to control your own negative emotions which may be harmful to your child

Scroll up and download this easy and informative read today! It could help save your sanity and better parent your children.

World War II History, $2.99 at Amazon

As was true with my previous post, I ran across this one yesterday, but didn't have time to post it. It was $2.99 then and is $2.99 now, but I don't know how long that it will stay that way.

This is a major revision of the original, 1966, edition and the definitive single-volume work on the subject of World War II.

The American Heritage History of World War II. By Stephen E. Ambrose; C.L. Sulzberger. Rated 5 stars, but out of only 1 review at the present moment (this is a brand new edition). Kindle price now $2.99. It's also available at (Apple) iTunes and Barnes & Noble at the same price as the Kindle. http://www.amazon.com/American-Herit...f+World+War+II.

The American Heritage History of World War II was first published in 1966. At the time, author and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist C.L. Sulzberger received widespread praise for his authoritative account of the six-year war that involved more than fifty-six nations, resulted in the death of some 22 million people, and shaped the course of history. His work became a standard reference on the war.

Stephen E. Ambrose, one of the most highly regarded historians of our time, oversaw a major revision of this classic work. Seamlessly incorporating new material and insights, Ambrose produced a comprehensive and riveting account of the war’s key characters and events.

In planes and foxholes, in deserts and jungles, on ships and beaches, Ambrose shines a light on the people involved - the leaders, the fighters, the victims. He also added new chapters on the atrocities of the Holocaust and revelations about the secret war of espionage. Ambrose’s analysis also offers insight into the events that precipitated the Cold War.

This book captures the courage, commitment, military genius, and horror of the war that gave birth to a new era in world politics. For students, history buffs, and fascinated readers,
The American Heritage History of World War II is the definitive single-volume work on the subject and will endure as a major narrative of world history.

Kindle Motivational Bargain

As was true with my two previous posts, I ran across this one yesterday, but didn't have time to post it. It was $3.99 then and is $3.99 now, but I don't know how long that it will stay that way.

Frankly, I am so thrifty (that sounds better than "miserly." haha) that I don't like to buy or even post books this expensive. But this one, even at $3.99, is reduced way, way down in price (from the print list price). Too, it looks to me like it is on its way to be a modern-day classic. I just wish that it was Whispersync'd (it apparently isn't).

The Obstacle Is the Way: The Timeless Art of Turning Trials into Triumph. By Ryan Holiday. Print list price $24.95; Kindle price now $3.99. The book is also available at the same price at (Apple) iTunes, Barnes & Noble, Google Play, and Kobo. Rated 4 and 1/2 stars out of 47 reviews at the present moment (the book has a publication date of May 1, 2014. I don't know how it could have gotten 47 reviews since then. Maybe Amazon is counting reviews from a previous edition? I dunno. I'm not going to bother trying to figure that out.). http://www.amazon.com/Obstacle-Way-T...s+into+Triumph.

“The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.” — Marcus Aurelius

We are stuck, stymied, frustrated. But it needn’t be this way. There is a formula for success that’s been followed by the icons of history—from John D. Rockefeller to Amelia Earhart to Ulysses S. Grant to Steve Jobs—a formula that let them turn obstacles into opportunities. Faced with impossible situations, they found the astounding triumphs we all seek.

These men and women were not exceptionally brilliant, lucky, or gifted. Their success came from timeless philosophical principles laid down by a Roman emperor who struggled to articulate a method for excellence in any and all situations.

This book reveals that formula for the first time—and shows us how we can turn our own adversity into advantage.

Hello Gorgeous (No, I'm Not Talking to You--That Is the Title of the Book)

Here's a Kindle bargain on this 605 page biography of Barbra Streisand. And, if you buy the Kindle ebook you can get a great deal on the matching Whispersync audio version, too.

Hello, Gorgeous: Becoming Barbra Streisand. By William J. Mann. Print list price $16.95; digital list price $16.95; Kindle price now $2.73. Rated 4 stars from 192 reviews at the present moment. The Whispersync companion to the Kindle is $4.99. http://www.amazon.com/Hello-Gorgeous...rbra+Streisand.

“Barbra Streisand’s story may be the most triumphant case of revenge in show business history . . . Mann vividly evokes the atmosphere of Streisand’s New York.”—New York Times

In 1960, Barbra Streisand was just a seventeen-year-old Brooklyn kid with plenty of talent but no connections and certainly no money; her mother brought her soup to make sure she stayed fed as she took acting classes and scraped out a living. Just four years later, she was the top-selling female recording artist in America and the star of one of Broadway’s biggest hits. In Hello, Gorgeous, the acclaimed Hollywood biographer William Mann chronicles that dizzying ascent, telling the riveting behind-the-scenes story of how Streisand and her team transformed her from an unknown dreamer into one of the world’s most beloved superstars.

“Trying to figure out the Barbra Streisand mystique is no easy task, but author William Mann expertly captures the launch of her remarkable career in the early 1960s when a unique ‘star was born’ . . . Mann's meticulous research and insightful analysis go deeper than any previous biography: shedding light on the formative years that shaped Streisand's persona, debunking some myths . . . and providing a cultural snapshot of the wild and free-spirited era in which Streisand blossomed.”—
USA Today

“In his masterful book, Mann captures one of the most fully realized pictures of the multi-hyphenate superstar to date . . . Many books have been written about Streisand but few, if any, put readers as close to the subject as Mann does."—Miami Herald

My Funny Free Kindle Book Post of the Day (or Whenever)

Here's a great book to make your 7th and 8th grader have to study this summer while all of their friends are at camp, the beach. the lake, or wherever having a good time. They may hate you now, but they're guaranteed to grow up to be Wheel of Fortune champions and win lots of money. Oh, and they'll forgive you for ruining their summer vacation after getting all of that money from Pat and Vanna. And, maybe, just maybe, they'll even share some of that money with you. What if there is no Wheel of Fortune, Pat Sajak, or Vanna White after they've grown up? Well, sorry, all bets are off then . . . .

I know that the author intended this to be a serious book, but I think that it's funny. See what you think.

English Prodigy Spelling Bootcamp for Grades 7 & 8. By Kalman Toth M.A. M.Phil. Rated 4 stars, but out of just 1 review. Print list price $14.95; digital $14.95; Kindle price now $0.00. http://www.amazon.com/English-Prodig...Grades+7+%26+8.

THIS ILLUSTRATED BOOK WITH BASIC K-7 TO K-8 COGNITIVE ENGLISH PRODIGY SPELLING EXERCISES IS FOR THE STUDENT, PARENT, TEACHER OR TUTOR. THE COGNITIVE EXERCISES REVOLVE AROUND FINDING THE MISSING LETTERS IN WORDS & BUILDING WORDS FROM FIRST & LAST LETTERS OF OTHER WORDS OR A LIST OF LETTERS. COGNITIVE PATTERN RECOGNITION FORMS THE VERY BASIS OF OUR THINKING AND HUMAN INTELLIGENCE. SOLUTIONS PROVIDE ONE OR MORE WORDS MATCHING THE MISSING LETTERS PATTERN. THE COGNITIVE ENGLISH SPELLING EXERCISES ARE AT FOUR DIFFERENT LEVELS ALLOWING CUSTOMIZATION FOR EACH STUDENT.

The exclusive use of the uppercase in the book description is the author's. Don't you just hate it when people use all uppercase letters without a good reason? I do.

The Life of Elizabeth I
by Alison Weir

is $1.99 at

Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Life-Elizabeth...of+elizabeth+i

B&N http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/the-...e+of+elizabeth

Below is the blurb
Perhaps the most influential sovereign England has ever known, Queen Elizabeth I remained an extremely private person throughout her reign, keeping her own counsel and sharing secrets with no one--not even her closest, most trusted advisers. Now, in this brilliantly researched, fascinating new book, acclaimed biographer Alison Weir shares provocative new interpretations and fresh insights on this enigmatic figure.

Against a lavish backdrop of pageantry and passion, intrigue and war, Weir dispels the myths surrounding Elizabeth I and examines the contradictions of her character. Elizabeth I loved the Earl of Leicester, but did she conspire to murder his wife? She called herself the Virgin Queen, but how chaste was she through dozens of liaisons? She never married--was her choice to remain single tied to the chilling fate of her mother, Anne Boleyn? An enthralling epic that is also an amazingly intimate portrait, The Life of Elizabeth I is a mesmerizing, stunning reading experience.

Big Price Drop on the Snowden Files--Kindle

Well, I tried to think of something funny (that I think is funny anyway) to introduce this post, but it's just too late at night/early in the morning and the ole brain is trying to shut down. So, without any fanfare, here it is . . . .

The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World's Most Wanted Man. By Luke Harding. Print list price $14.95; Kindle price now $1.99. Rated 4 1/2 stars from 82 reviews at the present moment. http://www.amazon.com/Snowden-Files-...ost+Wanted+Man.

IT BEGAN WITH A TANTALIZING, ANONYMOUS EMAIL: “I AM A SENIOR MEMBER OF THE INTELLIGENCE COMMUNITY.”

What followed was the most spectacular intelligence breach ever, brought about by one extraordinary man. Edward Snowden was a 29-year-old computer genius working for the National Security Agency when he shocked the world by exposing the near-universal mass surveillance programs of the United States government. His whistleblowing has shaken the leaders of nations worldwide, and generated a passionate public debate on the dangers of global monitoring and the threat to individual privacy.

In a tour de force of investigative journalism that reads like a spy novel, award-winning
Guardian reporter Luke Harding tells Snowden’s astonishing story—from the day he left his glamorous girlfriend in Honolulu carrying a hard drive full of secrets, to the weeks of his secret-spilling in Hong Kong, to his battle for asylum and his exile in Moscow. For the first time, Harding brings together the many sources and strands of the story—touching on everything from concerns about domestic spying to the complicity of the tech sector—while also placing us in the room with Edward Snowden himself. The result is a gripping insider narrative—and a necessary and timely account of what is at stake for all of us in the new digital age.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

Kindle Bargain on Bruce Catton's Battle of Gettysburg

The Battle of Gettysburg. By Bruce Catton. Rated 5 stars, but from only 1 review (this is a newly published book). Print list price $29.95; Kindle price now $2.99. http://www.amazon.com/Battle-Gettysb...+of+Gettysburg.

Catton has written gazillions of books on the Civil War, all of them well-rated. This book on the Battle of Gettysburg was published for the first time just last month.

Bruce Catton, Pulitzer-Prize winner and one of the most acclaimed historians of the Civil War, vividly recreates the 1863 Battle of Gettysburg. From the opening shots to General George Pickett's ill-fated charge, he tells the dramatic story of the battle that resulted in more than 51,000 Union and Confederate casualties and changed the course of the war.

Choice of One of Seven Free, Fantastic Ebooks on Business-Related Subjects

A website owned and run by Simon & Schuster, http://250words.com/, is giving away one free ebook to each person who subscribes to their daily emails. I assume that all of the books offered are Simon & Schuster, or related company, imprints.

The offer is "valid for new subscribers only and expires 6/30/14" etc., etc., etc.

Here's how you get the book. Go to http://250words.com/free-ebook/ and enter your email address to subscribe to their daily emails. They will send a redemption code to your email address, and a link to another website where you will need to type in the redemption code, if it is not there already, and click on a link to get your book.

Oh, I looked and found a link at the bottom of that email message that you would use to unsubscribe from the emails. So, I would think that it is easy to unsubscribe from them should you choose to do so after you've gotten your free book.

I guess you're dying to know what delicious ebooks are available. Here they are (at least, the ones that I was offered). I'm sorry, there simply is not enough room to give descriptions of all of these, but you should be able to get them all at http://bookshout.com/store/promos/pi...&step_number=2.
-Finding the Next Steve Jobs: How to Find, Keep, and Nurture Talent. By Nolan Bushnell.
-Contagious: Why Things Catch On. By Jonah Berger.
-Gold: The Race for the World's Most Seductive Metal. Matthew Hart.
-Happy Money: The Science of Smarter Spending. By Elizabeth Dunn.
-The Facebook Effect: The Inside Story of the Company that Is Connecting the World. By David Kirkpatrick.
-One Up on Wall Street: How to Use What You Already Know to Make Money In. By Peter Lynch.
-The Face-to-Face Book: Why Real Relationships Rule in a Digital Marketplace. By Ed Keller.

I don't know what format these books come in as I have not chosen the book that I want yet. I did read that "after redeeming your ebook, you can access it on the web, or from your smartphone or tablet." Once I've downloaded my book, I'll try to remember to update this post with what I find out about the format question. Of course, if you find out before I've posted the update, please feel free to post the update.

Now I've got the tough job of figuring out which book that I want . . . .

Thanks. You need to use the Bookshout website to read these. There appear to be iOS and Android apps as well but I haven't tried them.
