The bin folder you can see in screenshot 001 is at /bin. That's the system-wide bin folder, and you'd need root* permissions to write anything in it.

You can create a bin folder in /home/gregory. It's just another folder, so create it as you would any other, and call it "bin".

eschwartz might be suggesting that you create a /bin directory in your home directory (/home/gregg) because there isn't one there by default.

save it in a folder called "bin" inside your home folder, which is "/home/gregory/".

Any programs located in "/home/gregory/bin/" will be automatically found when you type them in the command line. (After first creating the "bin" folder, you need to log out then in for the folder to be sensed.)

Then to convert a book open the terminal, type in "kindlegen", space, the filename of the document to be converted, and there you go!
Sorry if I wasn't more clear -- if you create a folder called "bin" in your user folder (so it will be at "/home/gregory/bin/") you can put programs there which will be automatically sensed, see here for details: http://askubuntu.com/questions/9848/...rsonal-scripts

Particularly the second answer.

That was it, Russ. Thanks. And thanks for the root thing. I still need to learn about that stuff.

Thanks rjb. Created the bin folder there and it worked.

I got it! <shaking head> It seems so easy now. I remember using Kindlegen in Windows and it was like entering Einstein's theory of relativity. This was, like you said, kindlegen filename and presto! So much easier than Kindle Previewer! Pretty thrilling. Thanks!

the latest

I was copying and pasting a couple of files from Downloads to a flashdrive and got this (screenshot). The files pasted correctly so I just hit cancel. Is this anything to be concerned about? (I googled it and not a few people had the same issue, citing it as a bug, but nobody said if it was anything to be concerned about.) Thanks.

I was responding to the post before me.

Regarding the appropriate usage of progams on Windows, vs. simply dropping it in the "bin" folder, well, now you know why I like linux so much.

a complication

Testing things in the command line I successfully converted this:

Bell.Gregg.-.Front.Row[07.12.2013].epub

to a mobi.

But not this:

Bell,Gregg.-.Jamie's.Gamble[06.18.2013].epub

The command line gave no indication why it would not convert the latter, just giving me this:

<

But I experimented and when I removed the comma after "Bell" (in the latter) it converted.

Nearly all of my files are like the latter (with the commas). And I have them stored in several different places. (It could create quite a logistical hassle to be renaming all those files.)

So it seems Linux doesn't like commas. Would that be accurate?

And any ideas for overcoming this or should I just get to work changing over all the commas to periods?

Thanks.

I'd have expected the apostrophe to cause a problem, rather than the comma. Either way, wrapping the file name in speech marks, or adding a backslash immediately before the problem character, will solve the problem:

Code:
"Bell,Gregg.-.Jamie's.Gamble[06.18.2013].epub"
Bell\,Gregg.-.Jamie's.Gamble[06.18.2013].epub

You can also begin the filename, then press TAB to autocomplete. (This works for all filepaths, as well as commands. If there is only one possible choice based on what you have filled in, it will fill in the rest. If there are multiple options, one TAB will fill in to the first point where you have a choice between 2 characters, then double TABbing will print a list of possible completion values, then bring you back to your in-progress command.)

http://whylovelinux.wordpress.com/20...auto-complete/

Example:

Spoiler:
Type "l" then TAB TAB will print out:
Code:
[kterm]# l<TAB><TAB>
ldconfig
ldd
less
light.sh
line
lipc-daemon
lipc-get-prop
lipc-hash-prop
lipc-probe
lipc-send-event
lipc-set-prop
lipc-wait-event
ln
locale
localedef
logger
login
loginfo
logname
logsave
look
losetup
lpd
lpq
lpr
ls
lsattr
lsmod
lsof
lspci
lsusb
lua
luac
lxinit
lzop
lzopcat
[kterm]# l
type "ls" then TAB TAB will result in
Code:
[kterm]# ls<TAB><TAB>
ls
lsattr
lsmod
lsof
lspci
lsusb
[kterm]# ls
type "ls " then TAB TAB will result in
And
Code:
[kterm]# ls<invisible space here><TAB><TAB>
bin/
config.xml
layouts/
menu.json
[kterm]# ls<invisible space here>
type "ls b" then TAB will result in
And
Code:
[kterm]# ls b<tab>
[kterm]# ls bin/

This would be from my jailbroken kindle terminal, since I am not at my linux computer right now. So I apologize for the funny autocomplete results.

Short answer: no, don't worry about it.

Longer answer:

Extended file attributes are metadata associated with the file. They can contain virtually anything - author name, URL where the file was downloaded from, a hash or checksum of the file. Some programs might use that metadata (I think Dropbox uses them). There is a Wikipedia article on extended file attributes.

Flash drives usually use a file system called FAT32, which doesn't support them, hence the message.

Thanks, Russ. Did the quotation marks. Works great. Appreciate it. (REALLY glad there was a way out of this without re-naming.)

Thanks eschwartz. And thanks for the link. This is an awesome feature. It will be my next project to learn. And thanks for the example. I could see what you were talking about.

Cool. Thanks Russ. As long as it's copying properly, that's my major concern. Thanks for both explanations and the link.

If you use the terminal much, tab completion is absolutely fantastic. It will also automatically escape characters that need escaping. For example, if I have a file named "Gregg's book.epub" and I want to convert it to mobi, I type:
Code:
ebook-convert G
then hit tab, it auto-completes to:
Code:
ebook-convert Gregg\'s\ book.epub
If you could then type G and hit tab it'll auto-complete using the same file name. You can then backspace to delete the epub extension, and type in the new mobi extension.

Thanks Russ. I will use the terminal fairly much and I have a lot of files with really long names so I'm sure the auto complete will come in very handy. The "escape" is going to take a while to sink in, but eventually I'll get it. Thanks a lot for sharing it.
