I had no intention of promoting myself in this thread. I just wanted to clarify whether this thread disallowed mentioning books published by their authors. Now I know that it is for books that were not published by their authors.

Thank you for clearing that up.

Quite - I didn't lash out myself, either.
Fortunately my son's a fan, and was mad enough to buy the hardback, (makes a change from guitars....) so I shall appropriate it when the time is ripe !
Pay-back for all that "Bank of Dad" stuff at last ......

Did anyone else take advantage of this deal? The download is labeled "Combo Asimov & Analog" but when I downloaded it I only got Asimov's. I'm wondering if Analog is still coming or if there's a problem.

Edit: Never mind, they apparently have it configured as a single subscription and only one of the magazines shows as current even though both are new. It's in the past issues list.

I hadn't used the nook website in a while (not since my Fictionwise library transferred over). Is it always so slow? And does it really make you log in every time even when already logged into the main B&N site? Ugh.

I would have if I could, but it was not available in the UK, unfortunately. I did ask customer services about it, but they didn't have anything definite to say.

If that offer does come to the UK, I'd sign up like a shot.

I had separate subscriptions to Analog and Asimov's. I cancelled them on Wednesday and subscribed to the "combo" yesterday. So far, it looks like everything worked out okay.

I received the Asimov issue the other day when I signed up, and Analog today. Yes, the B&N website is usually that slow, except when it's slower. As near as I can tell, there's not logged in, sort of logged in (the site knows it's me until I try to buy something or go to my library), and logged in so I can buy a book or download something from my library. I think it's amazing that in all these years they've never done anything to improve the performance of their website.

The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman is the Kindle deal of the day in the German amazon - € 0.99

http://www.amazon.de/The-Graveyard-B.../dp/B0034C8LZM

It seems me that it is a deal internationally as well, $1.34 at Amazon.com

For those who missed it earlier in the week, Barnes & Noble brought back the 2-for-1 magazine deal on Asimov's & Analog, good through this weekend.

I wish they'd do the same for Hitchcock/Ellery Queen.

I had several of the individual books, but picked it up. With BookRiot50 and currency conversion, $9.44 which is still cheaper than the US edition The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy at $12.99 and not couponable or DRM free.

Trading in Danger by Elizabeth Moon

Trading in Danger by Elizabeth Moon is only $0.99 at Amazon and B&N as of the date of this post.
Spoiler:
Quote:
Kylara Vatta is the only daughter in a family full of sons, and her father’s only child to buck tradition by choosing a military career instead of joining the family business. For Ky, it’s no contest: Even running the prestigious Vatta Transport Ltd. shipping concern can’t hold a candle to shipping out as an officer aboard an interstellar cruiser. It’s adventure, not commerce, that stirs her soul. And despite her family’s misgivings, there can be no doubt that a Vatta in the service will prove a valuable asset. But with a single error in judgment, it all comes crumbling down.

Expelled from the Academy in disgrace–and returning home to her humiliated family, a storm of high-profile media coverage, and the gaping void of her own future–Ky is ready to face the inevitable onslaught of anger, disappointment, even pity. But soon after opportunity’s door slams shut, Ky finds herself with a ticket to ride– and a shot at redemption–as captain of a Vatta Transport ship.

It’s a simple assignment: escorting one of the Vatta fleet’s oldest ships on its final voyage . . . to the scrapyard. But keeping it simple has never been Ky’s style. And even though her father has provided a crew of seasoned veterans to baby-sit the fledgling captain on her maiden milk run, they can’t stop Ky from turning the routine mission into a risky venture–in the name of turning a profit for Vatta Transport, of course.

By snapping up a lucrative delivery contract defaulted on by a rival company, and using part of the proceeds to upgrade her condemned vehicle, Ky aims to prove she’s got more going for her than just her family’s famous name. But business will soon have to take a backseat to bravery, when Ky’s change of plans sails her and the crew straight into the middle of a colonial war. For all her commercial savvy, it’s her military training and born-soldier’s instincts that Ky will need to call on in the face of deadly combat, dangerous mercenaries, and violent mutiny. . . .

From the Hardcover edition.
