Going Nowhere Fast (The Joe and Dottie Loudermilk Mysteries) by Gar Anthony Haywood

Joe and Dottie Loudermilk are all set for the perfect early retirement. Joe's an ex-cop, and Dottie's a former English teacher, and as soon as the "SOLD" sign goes up on the lawn in front of their longtime Los Angeles home, they intend to take their brand new Ford pickup truck and Airstream trailer wherever the great American highway leads. Unfortunately, fate is determined to have two forms of trouble dog their every step: murder and their five incorrigible grown children. In Dottie's own words, the Loudermilk brood "go to school, but take pains not to learn anything remotely useful; date weird people and adhere to Mickey Mouse religions...And give birth to grandchildren from hell (whom they raise) like goldfish won at a church carnival." In this introductory adventure, Joe and Dottie visit the Grand Canyon in Arizona, where they're immediately confronted by a corpse in their bathroom, the FBI, an All-Pro lineman from the Los Angeles Raiders---and most frightening of all, their reprehensible son Bad Dog.
Both lovers of the offbeat cozy, and parents who know the misery of wayward children, have declared the Loudermilk adventures an hilarious and, to quote The New York Times, "credibly sentimental" treat.

Looks interesting, but that description confused me big time....

here's the one from goodreads in case I'm not the only one:

Quote:
Joe Loudermilk, a recently retired police officer, and his wife, Dottie, throw caution to the wind, leave their stable life and hit the road in a newly acquired Airstream trailer home. As parents of five grown children, each one a pain, they're only too happy to leave them and their problems behind.

While visiting the Grand Canyon, Joe and Dottie return to their home on wheels to find their youngest son, known as Bad Dog, hiding in a closet with a gun in his hand - and a dead man on the toilet. Believing Bad Dog's innocence, they take off across the Arizona desert in search of the killer with the FBI, the National Park Service, the LA Raiders and the Mob on their heels.

For those who missed the huge Ed McBain sale at Amazon a while back, 31 (assuming I counted correctly) of his 87th Precinct books are on sale again today only, for $1.99 each, as part of the US Kindle Daily Deal.

For those who aren't familiar with Ed McBain (pen name for Evan Hunter), he was a master of the police procedural, and won both a Grand Master Award and a Diamond Dagger. A link to the old thread about the previous sale with info/discussion about the books is here.

There are also 19 other mystery/thrillers on sale, although I didn't find many to like/buy, since most appear to lean more towards the thriller than the mystery, at least from the blurbs, and I'm not big on thrillers.

I'm not going to provide a link since arcadata usually does in his/her affiliate thread, for those who don't mind giving her/him the affiliate referral fee, and presumably we all know how to find the Kindle Daily Deal anyway.

Kindle is having a sale again, as noted above, on some Ed McBain novels.

They're $1.99, which isn't too bad. I was able to buy 35 for .99 each a number of months ago. They're higher now but, as I said, it's still a good buy.

Here's the link to the Amazon page for all these titles:

They can easily be. Buy with Kindle for PC. Import to Calibre. Convert to ePub format for your Sony. Ask your good friend Alf about DRM removal.

You don't need to own a Kindle to take advantage of Amazon's great deals.

You have many friends here.

Calibre may be your best friend, since you don't have to wash his clothes or feed him. He's as silent as sleeping baby. And no diapers to change.

What more could you ask of a friend?

The conversion process is quick and simple and can be batched so that you do all of them at the same time.

If you already bought or are buying the Ed McBain ebooks and like audiobooks, for $0.99 or $1.99 you can add whispersync audiobooks of some of them via Audible. I used up the rest of my $10 credit (expires at the end of the month) on audiobooks of #15 through 18 in the series. Some of the non-Ed McBain books have whispersync audiobooks available for $0.99 as well.

You don't have to do "a bunch of conversions". Just tell Calibre to send the books to your Sony and it'll do it all for you completely automatically. Obviously the choice is yours, but you did say that you'd like to have these books on your Sony.

I racked up on the Ed McBain books when they were .99 cents each as well. I think I purchased every single one that was available at that price. I had heard a lot of good things about this series but had never read it. I really like it so far.

My problem is that many of the ones I need to complete the series aren't even available in Kindle format. I keep waiting but alas, nothing. Hopefully at some point they will make all of them in Kindle/Ebook format. Missing #3, #6, #12, etc.

Still a good price at $1.99 but so glad I took advantage of the 99 cent sale on these books.

Harry etal, Perhaps I'm uninformed.

Are you saying that an Amazon book can be bought and downloaded to my PC and then I can use Calibre to <Add Book> to my Sony and Calibre will format it and save it in readable format on the Sony?

Thanks!
