The Martian is yet another useless ePub 3 eBook. It should be an ePub 2 eBook as it has nothing in it that uses any ePub 3 specific features. And because of that, Kobo has it as a kepub only. When will publishers learn that just because it can be done doesn't mean it should be done. ePub 3 just for the sake of ePub 3 is really stupid. Make them ePub 2 and let well enough alone.

What does "a spare sci-fi-adventure tale" means? Should it perhaps be "space" rather than "spare"?
Let's hope that Mr Scott does better with this one than he did with Exodus, which contained horrendous historical inaccuracies (eg the Giza pyramids being built by Jewish slaves ![]() |

I suspect "spare" might be a reference to how much of the story takes place with just a single character on the whole planet.
At least, I hope they don't try to turn it into an "epic." |

I didn't want it to end!! (I just finished it, and when I got to the latter part of the book, I just read a 2-3 chapters per day to preserve it. Hahaha.
But after a week, I finally finished The Martian, and I loved it! (but I was also very melancholic that there are no more Mark Watney adventures to read...sigh) |

For anyone who is interested, The Kindle Chronicles has an interview with Andy Weir about The Martian in the latest (episode 338) TKC. I am in the middle of listening to it now so no review/comments. But there are a couple minor spoilers in the couple minutes I have heard so far. Interview starts at 11:39.

In interview he says that he doesn't have an idea (beside silly ones) about how to continue adventures of Mark Watney. The obvious one would be that NASA has noticed something on Mars - somewhere along his long journey to Schiaparelli. He is the only one who knows the region. He must have seen something. Would that be not silly enough? |

I just cannot see how a sequel would work without feeling forced.

I have to agree with JSWolf on this one. It would feel contrived to have another book/movie sequel... however... since it's Andy Weir, he could make something up and have me ride the bandwagon in a second. (I really, really like his book's sense of humor.)

Actually I felt shocked when I saw the F word at the beginning while reading the sample. I am OK with books that use the F word sometimes when necessary, but I am uncomfortable when I see it in the first sentence. Does this book use a lot of F word?

@JohnRR, it's not exactly there all the time, just in Mark Watney moment of highlights. People rarely hear me use the F-bomb myself, so when I read it in the first sentence, I was also quite surprised myself.
But then I realized he blurted it out as he was realizing his... predicament. And then I understood why he did it. Hahahaha. |
