Actually I would be fine if every English speaking place used the same spelling. Why it should be American I don't get. I think it would be best if we just came up with a completely new spelling.

And since when did ebooks use ink?

American words have, for the most part, fewer letters. They don't have the "u" or the "e" that are present in British spelling. Or Canadian etc.

And I just learned of the alternate spelling of "flutist" so we can add "a" to the list.

Americans are so self centred!
Okay so most words do have more letters in Canada, but really is this significant? And and that still does not explain how ebooks use ink!
P.S. My comment about Americans being self centred is not meant as an insult. It was just to illustrate that not ALL Canadian words are longer.

I was just thinking that since the digital file may have the same source as the physical if the print version has American spelling then the digital version would also.

Ink is expensive. Companies always seem to be looking for ways to save costs. Therefore, I was wondering if publishers use American spelling as much as possible to save costs. Fewer letters printed; less ink used. Per book it's insignificant but multiplied by millions and it may add up to where a mid-level executive would notice.

I also noticed that British words have double letters such as entrall and travelling. Add -gramme, -logue.

Anyway, it was just a thought that flew out of my head.

It is an interesting thought I suppose. But I still think it insignificant. There is probably more ink used to print the recite for an actual book.

What made me make this thread was when I was reading a book by a UK Author set in England and it used American spelling!
What annoys me even more is I have found several UK sites that sell it with the UK spelling (I think even kobo does) but I am not allowed to by it!
Bob, I agree. I would rather read a book in the original English, instead of having it 'translated' into 'American' for me. You lose the opportunity to learn more about another culture and many subtleties.

Thanks.
Now that you mention it, how does anyone find out where a book is from on an e-book site? I just went to Smashwords and looked on the front page where the new releases are and clicked on the first one - a book called Christmas with Norbert, and could not see anything in the general info that would indicate where it was written. By coincidence the book was tagged with the word British, but what are the odds of that in general? More books have tags of where they are set: Canada, England, Iceland, the Moon; and that does not mean that they were actually written there.
Like Anne of Green Gables and The Shipping news, where one author is Canadian and the other American.

The versions of L.M.Montgomery's books that I read always seemed to have UK spelling. It did not occur to me that it was probably Canadian spelling. I can't remember if The Shipping News had US or UK spelling, but that may be because it was so delicious that nothing got between the words and the generated emotions. I do remember it had a curly accent thing under the 'c' of 'facade' that stood out like the sound of a bell.

It's a stumper. There are always the classics to read, the Christies or the Dickenses... Even as I write it I notice it is singularly unhelpful. Sorry.
