That's kind of my point, we don't know what it will offer, yet you seem to say it just plain doesn't matter because it won't be good enough. You may be right, but I'd hate to see them take your "might as well not even bother" approach that seems to permeate the post I quoted from you.

Also, the last chart I saw showed 2 million ebooks available for Nook whereas Kindle had 950,000 unless I misread that. What is this "lack of content" you're referring to? Apps maybe (but again what the NC2 will have access to is as yet unknown) but certainly not books.
If BN is listing 2 million or close to 2 million titles then that number is highly inflated. I know Amazon had a much higher count at one point in time that included the public domain books and the ones that had been duplicated because different people had posted them.

Do you have a link that supports that? My Kindle 3 shows more than that on the Kindle store.

Both companies have been extremely cautious when publishing those numbers so I have my doubts about such B&N report.

Just in computer books, Amazon beats B&N by far, barely followed by O'Reilly but with higher prices, twice or even triple the price per ebook.

B&N's 2 million count includes some 1.5-1.8 million public domain books. Amazon has those available too, but they don't include them in their book count.

Surely I'm not the only one on this forum who is guilty of speculation. No one knows what any company is going to do. That doesn't stop us from chiming in and going back and forth with each. Why is it a problem now?

Hey, speculation is part of the fun. .

I feel that competition is good , and I'm hoping that B&N will pull a rabbit out of the hat, rather than just lay down and die, which seems to be what most people on the thread seem to want them to do.
I will admit that they are in a bind, though.

Well, my 1st erader was a Nook, and I love being in B&N and spend quality of time there, I even buy some paper books sporadically, expensive ones by the way. But the thing is, their computer book's section is poor (on the store and online) and that's what I read most. It has not changed for better since last time I checked. A new and improved Nook won't boost those numbers in a blink.

It's also about the content!

Actually it was from a chart posted here on MR. Just look for the thread about a comparison chart of e-readers. I guess it really doesn't matter. B&N has all the books I've looked for so far so that's good enough for me.

I'd be more surprised if you DIDN'T doubt something B&N says.

Of all the people I know IRL who use Nooks, Kindles, Kobo's etc, they use them to read novels. I'm in I.T. as well and I have to wonder how big the segment of users is who would read technical manuals/computer books on their e-ink device. I know I wouldn't but it is a curiosity.

Speculation is great, but when there are no details whatsoever, it goes from speculation to taking shots in the dark.

So you're suggesting B&N has somewhere in the neighborhood of only 200k-500k books available outside of Public Domain books? You may be right but I'd like to see the source on that.

Fair enough, and that's what should be really important on your case, same for me and Kindle/Amazon.

But I respectfully disagree in that B&N online collection is bigger than Amazon's. I do not think that's the case.

Well now wait a second, if you're going to stop me from making a claim about a larger book presence because neither side will release their numbers then you need to do the same.

Open Amazon site and go to Kindle Store › Kindle eBooks. On left side, you should see available titles for an specific gen or topic.

To give you an example, for non fiction, there are about 711k available titles. Computers and Internet, about 26k. And so on. I'm bad with numbers ... so if you add all those, you will get the total amount of Kindle titles you can get from Amazon's store.

You can get the same details on the Kindle as well by the way, Amazon store.
