Don't know if it helps anyone in their investigations, but mine (3G) was purchased here in the UK in May, and was running the latest 3.2.whateveritwas.

When there are software updates on my Mac, it asks me if I want them, let's me decide what to choose, and tells me what they are. Same for my iPod Touch, and my Playstation 3.

I guess I just find it a little perturbing that I had no control over it whatsoever, and it happened without notice. I'm sure it's all very innocent and maybe even necessary (perhaps a security update?) but why not just tell us what's going on??

At least we know it is real. But theories about it being related to library lending must be incorrect since a UK Kindle got updated. It might have something to do with the new Amazon website or any number of things. I guess it doesn't matter as long as it doesn't mess up my ability to use a side loaded font or adjust the margins to less than 40!

@buckrogers: If you had the SS hack installed when you received the update, the hack should have made a backup of the update file in the linkss folder. If I can somehow get my hands on that file, I should be able to at least tell what parts of the software have been touched.

Thanks! It just with some calling it a myth, I wanted to see it for myself. lol It doesn't seem to be library related as everyone can check out books without any firmware update. So I'm with you what the heck is it and what does it add or fix? Someone needs to call Kindle CS and demand answers.

Does anyone who doesn't have a 3G model been updated to 3.3?

I have a KSO WiFi and have the 3.3 upgrade. I noticed it after downloading a Kindle book from the library last Monday.

I have uploaded the file Update_558700031_611680021.bin that was in my linkss folder to a file sharing site. I will send you a private message with the link. I presume that's what you want?

Hopefully this might begin to shed some light on the whole situation? As the days pass I find myself becoming more suspicious and curious about the update. I have yet to find an answer as to why it has only gone to some people and not others, and of course what on earth it is was in the first place.

I've complained here about Amazon's lack of open documentation as compared to, ahem, Microsoft. But Amazon, for some reason, doesn't jump when I post.

For the record, they still have me at 3.1 with my 3rd generation 3G, dead authors screen saver edition.

Unfortunately, this is par for the course with Amazon. They don't tell us when to expect updates, what's in them, or give us a choice of opting out. The rollouts are sporadic and seem to follow no logic or pattern.

If, as andrys said on page 5 of this thread, it's just to give non-KSO kindles the option of receiving advertising, I am going to be very annoyed. The last big update was for advertising, too, and I didn't buy a kindle to be an easy mark for advertisers.

I emailed Amazon asking for the source code to 3.3, here's their response
