I don't know if this is the right thread or not, but I searched and couldn't find anything relevant. I got a color nook running CyanogenMod 7 from a 16 gig sdcard. I didn't partition the card before putting the image on it, I'm thinking I should have. Anyway, how can I utilize the space that is left over for storage. My windows computer will not even recognize it as mass storage
I'm new to the nook, but not to modding. Any help would be greatly appreciated |

To format the card in Windows, you'll need SD Formatter. If that doesn't work, use a program like EASEUS Partition Manager to delete all partitions but /sdcard, and extend that one to take up the remaining space. Of course, you could also use EASEUS to extend that partition on your current install, if you want to stick with what you've got. |

My experience might be helpful to you because I am a rank beginner.
I had that problem. Windows will not recognise partitions on an SD card, so you need to go into Administration and delete the partition, if you failed to root it. Or download a commercial partitioner like Partition Magic and use that to restore your card's hidden partition. During the installation process using the SD card, the NC will partition the card, and unlike your computer, the NC will recognise it. From an 8gb card, I have 6gb usable space, or thereabouts, for data, and I have lots of apps installed. I had rooted my NC to Froyo, but the Market stopped working, and so I restored to stock. That turned out to be tricky, because I hadn't realised that Clockwork Mod wipes out the restore partition on the Nook. But there is an easy-ish way to restore to stock. Effectively you flash the unit with a new image, restoring it back to 1.1. Then I re-registered, sideloaded the 1.3 update, and I was good to go. I decided to try the dual-booting technique, that is, putting everything on a micro SD card, so that when I removed the card from the NC, I was back to stock. I like the Nook reader on the NC, and I sometimes do demonstrations on ereaders and ereading (I'm an author, and I write for digital publishers) so it's handy to have a stock rooted NC. But I resented paying for apps that are free on Android, and I wanted a little more versatility for my NC. All you do is set up the card on the computer as per instructions - and they are dead easy to follow, so thank you everyone who has published instructions - and then insert the card. The Nook does the rest. Basically, you download four files. an "image writer" program, a generic image, a zipped file with the Operating System on it, and a zipped file for the GAPPS market, which is the Google Android market and some other goodies. You "write" the image to the card using the image writer program, then copy the zipped files. I found it easiest to copy the Operating System one and the GAPPs one on at the same time, but I understand that because of licensing problems, the instructors can't tell you to do that. But it does work. I used an 8 gb card which is a class 10 one, which was what I had available. You're supposed to use a class 4, but I didn't have one, and I was just trying it out. Everything is reversible. And to my shock, it worked! Honestly, better than rooting your device and having to fiddle about getting it back to stock if it stops working. If this baby stops, I'll go through the process again on another card. I did have to have a few tries at getting it right, but that was my fault, as I still had Clockwork Mod installed on my NC from the previous root and didn't realise it. Hope some of that helps! |

I used the last stable release.
I wanted to try out a nightly, so since I'm a beginner, instead of undoing my card that works, I did it on a spare 4gb card, class 4. It didn't work. It went through the installation process, then, after I rebooted, it stalled just after the "loading" screen. Wouldn't go any further. I presume it's the card, though it should work, given the card's specs. Am about to buy a 16gb card for my phone, so before I install it, I'll have a go with that. |

FYI, there's finally a stable 7.1 release, so no need to go nightlies for an up-to-date ROM. The only reason we were recommending nightlies over stable releases was because there had been such a long gap (6 months!) since the last stable release. Now that they finally got out the first 7.1 stable, I wouldn't be surprised to see a return to stable releases every few weeks.
Of course, CM8/9 nightlies (Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich) may be less than a month away, by one of the main NC devs' estimation ![]() |

OK, it's rooted, NOW WHAT?
Today, I followed the instructions and rooted my nook color. That part went fine as near as I can tell. Used the instructions from the "Flavors of Daylight" and ended up with Cyanogen 7.
Added cm_encore_full-253.zip and gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip for the other pieces.... Stuff APPEARED to install OK. BUT, what do I do now? This thing looks like some bizarre refugee from an android phone. It has a phone icon on the home page, contacts, car home, camera and so on on the whatever-page-it-is that has all the icons on it, and so on. Is this the way it's supposed to look or do I have some kind of goofy installation? I can't even find the setting to get rid of the android wallpaper on the home page. I got out to the Android Market and downloaded Dolphin Browser HD, and, in theory, it installed fine, but when I select that icon, I just get a blank, white screen....... Is there a topic SOMEWHERE here that provides clear, unambiguous, idiot-proof information on how to set the NC up once it has Android so it'll work as a bookreader, get rid of all the phone stuff (presuming it's actually a legitimate part of the installation), and get the browsers and all the other stuff that just keeps popping up "<xxx> isn't working" and lets me either "Force exit" or "Wait"... I'll admit I'm quite ignorant about Android, but this doesn't seem quite normal. |

OK, after giving up last night, this morning I finally figured out how to get rid of the wallpaper, BUT, I also managed to create two icons on the desktop I can't get rid of...
I hit menu. Then I hit "Launcher Actions". Then I'm not sure what I hit, but I ended up with an icon that takes me to the screen of application icons when I hit it. To compound things I did it AGAIN 'cause I apparently couldn't believe things were getting created, and I ALSO have one that does a "Move to default desktop", which doesn't appear to do anything...... BUT, I don't see anything on the menu to get RID of these, and unlike the other icons, holding them doesn't bring up the trash can to delete them. How do I get rid of these? I'll go search some more, but it there a listing that explains what all the setting are are for? Getting into settings is easy, but figuring out what's doing what isn't... |

Long press the icon - you should be able to delete from there.

I use the N2A (Nook to Android) card which I purchased. I didn't have the time to do it myself and this thing WORKS. Excellent support and boy does Nook Color work at a tablet.

OK, I keep reading all these things about how great the NC is as a tablet.......
So, I need to do some trivial things: 1. Still presuming all this stuff is SUPPOSED to be on here, how do I get rid of all the cell phone junk? 2. Book reader - which free book reader should be installed? 3. I haven't rummaged yet, but does Calibre work on this thing? If no, what DO I install? 4. There's GOTTA be an easier way to get the book to the reader than having to go to home/apps/file manager/down to directories/into the books and on and on... Is there someplace that describes the really great things I can do now that I'm (in theory) a tablet? Like HOW TO GET THE DOLPHIN BROWSER TO ACTUALLY WORK? |

1. Tap. Hold. Delete.
2. Lots of people like Aldiko or Moon+, ezPDF for PDFs. PerfectViewer for comics. 3. I don't use mine as an ebook reader, someone else will have to answer. 4. I've had no trouble with Dolphin browser. What problems are you having, specifically? As to the really great things you can do, go rummage around the Android Market. The possibilities are nearly limitless. I'm particularly fond of the American Civil War Gazette, but I'm a bit of a history buff. |

OK, lemme try to be a bit more specific. And folks, I'll apologize in advance, 'cause I'm probably going to vent some time in the next 10 minutes:
First, no matter where I am, I have to hit the home button, then the apps button (a square with three squares of four in it) to get anywhere... If I'm on the apps page, and I start something like Browser, the back button doesn't take me back to the apps page, it dumps me back on the home page. Why isn't back, back? And periodically, the "Recent" screen shows up, WITHOUT hitting the "n". And right now, it's up and the thing is just frozen. Hitting home does nothing. Hitting back does nothing. Eventually, I hold on/off and reboot. If I go to the Market, and download some app, eventually it installs and I get left on a screen that says "open" or "uninstall". Except I've already opened it and done something. All I want to do is get somewhere else to do something else. Instead, I'm back to the screen where I installed... HOW do I shut off all the <stuff> I don't want running? BUT, at the moment, none of this matters 'cause now that it's rebooted I no longer have an "apps" button. Gone. Home does nothing. Back does nothing. The menu button (three horizontal lines) does nothing... After a 6 minute wait, the menu button finally came to life and I was able to put the apps button back. But, instead of being at the bottom of the home screen where it was, it's not at the top, says "Open/close" and I don't appear to be able to reposition it in the middle at the bottom where it previously was... Oh, as far as the Dolphin Browser... Hit the button, screen turns white. Just sits there. This time I let it just sit, and after 11 minutes it finally said "start". Went in, skipped connecting for sync, it turned black, and after a couple more minutes popped up "Activity Dolphin Browser HD (in application Dolphin Browser HD) is not responding." This is what happens with most of the stuff I've tried so far... And, its the kind of trivial excrement that's so frustrating. I suspect 25 years ago, when I started using DOS and early Windows I found that same kind of incredibly annoying stupidity, but that was 25 YEARS AGO. I figured Android would be a lot more evolved and idiot-proof. OK, even though it's sitting there telling me it's not responding, it finally responded behind the popup. I now have a Dolphin window. So HOW do I close the thing? There's no close button? There's no red "X" in the top right. Do I have to hit Home EVERY time I want to go somewhere else? I think I'll put this off to the side again (I'm good for about an hour of this kind of frustration before I stick it in a corner for a couple days) and go see if I can't find some puppies to kick... And now it stuck up a popup that wants me to RATE the Dolphin Browser, which I'd be happy to do, but hitting the button dumps me BACK in the Market page with the "open" and "uninstall" buttons......... SO, is there the equivalent of an "Android for Dummies" 'cause I've used 4 types of O/S on IBM machines, used VMS on VAX for 12 years, been using Windows for 25 years, tolerated Unix for ages, and a half dozen other operating system, but this is incredible... So, tutorial? Survival guide? |

My wife wouldn't let me kick any puppies, so I ate pie instead...
OK... Deleting... Tap.Hold.Delete. does not work. How do I delete Camera, Car Home, Phone, Talk, Voice Dialer, etc? 'Cause even though a trashcan shows up at the top of the screen when I hold them, they never go away. And I need a book reader... Not a magical book reader that connects to a or tries to log into somewhere, just a book reader that'll work at LEAST as well as the NC did before it became a tablet, and connect to all the books that are ALREADY sitting in memory on the thing. I don't want to have to reload everything, I don't want to have to store the books on the little SD card. I just want to put them where I put them from Calibre, and read them on the tablet while finding them with a simple organizer (hopefully one that's BETTER than the kludgy thing from B&N)... I think I need more pie...... |

If you joined Nook for PC (which is free), wouldn't all your content show up on your PC and then you can sideload it in your Nook? I have a Nook tablet I bought three days ago and I just downloaded Nook for PC from BN and all my books and content showed up on my PC. I opened up my latest purchase and there it was. I'm new at this so have patience with me if I'm way off base.
