I would thinking paying 10-20 dollars per review might get you some decent reviews, although the more you pay the higher the quality of your potential reviews. You do have to consider that the reader's time is valuable after all.

The danger of that is that paying the reviewer makes he or she is not going to be as objective. In drug trials, the result nearly always comes out in a way favourable to the company paying for the trial. It's bound to be even worse with a paid review.

I agree- as much as I need money (lol), there is no way I'd make a pay-per-review service. I think that taints the review and makes the objectivity forever questionable.

Yeaaah pay-per-reviews are a bit suspicious. I think reviewers still could make money, but not off authors. It wouldn't be suspicious if they received money independently from the authors, say through advertising, affiliate marketing, or the reader's donations and stuff.

It occurs to me that it might be just as well that people are not reviewing as critics. Would we really want a review that said things like "Frequent point of view shifts, combined with an uneven grasp of English and overuse of adjectives"?

i only do a review if something really strikes me. i don't have the energy to write 50 reviews of good yet not "holy crap" novels.

and honestly, theres not much i can say about most books, i've gotta have something heartfelt to say about it. being a fun book that i enjoyed isn't enough to make me think of a review. i've gotta love it.

at the very least if there are already reviews, i'll mark ones that match my opinion as "helpful".
