I wonder if so many new devices arriving at the same time in October will create some downward pressure on pricing

I'm damn glad I saw this as I nearly gave into my ereader cravings and ordered a Sony Reader yesterday!

As someone who just bought a Sony Reader, I'm pleased with this. Two things jump out:
1) Sony is going to continue to support the Reader. That's good news.
2) The new reader is essentially a repackaging of the old one. That means that anything they do software-wise with the new one should work with the old one.

From a guess, the new Reader may actually be the new vizplex screen which will be nicer and a faster page turn. I'm hoping that they've put in a faster processor as well so books with embedded fonts render faster.

One thing I don't know if it is better is the new layout of digit keys. On the one hand it may be easier to use to select a menu item (just like on an ATM machine :-)); On the other I prefer current layout for use with Direct Page Control hack because I can reach them all by thumbs without moving my palms.

The larger RAM may help it render more complex LRF files. The current reader barfs (runs out of memory as far as i can tell) on long/complex ones, though I suspect that's partly due to bad design of the LRF reading software.

The new one is a little smaller:

"Old" Reader:
175.6mm x 123.6mm x 13.8mm

New Reader:
175mm x 122mm x 8mm

Seems to me that Sony has put too much importance on their Connect Store. I suppose they couldn't resist the lure of the selling content cash cow.

But on the other hand, it might not be as easy as it looks from the outside. There are licensing issues and every company seems to be jealously guarding their drm. I don't expect Amazon/Mobipocket to be different It doesn't look like the customer is going to get out of the locked device/drm jungle anytime soon.

All these competing formats are a bit like playing "musical device". Dunno what will happen when the music stops.

I'm also happy to see that they are continuing support for the Reader. And that means our mobileread books section can keep growing .lrf files. Yay! I was worried that with all the different ebook readers coming out, people would start wandering away from .lrf and move to just mobipocket format.

There is no mobipocket creator for Mac so I will stick with my reader and the good ole .lrf format that I am finally getting the hang of creating. But .html support would have been pretty nice--maybe next time.

I don't have a big craving for mobipocket stuff because of the DRM issues, but I do realize that it would make Sony much more competitive out there in the "real world" if people have more choices than just the Sony Store.

I like the look of the new reader, but I don't see anything that would make me upgrade from my current one.

New model or not, I'm in a mad rush to get my 3 younger brothers to sign up for Sony Cards and order Readers, ASAP... even if they don't want them, I'll be happy to reimburse them and keep a few backup units.

By the time I get through with them, we'll probably have better and cheaper ebook readers to choose from...

I like the old model far better for "looking styley". This new model to me looks just like any other silver consumer item you can buy enywhere. As for memory improvements - who cares? You can add SD or MMC cards if you need the extra space and we generally use the PC to store books and only have a dozen or so on the reader at any one time anyway.

there is a blue/black version too
http://hightech.afmag.net/sneak-prev...-prs505sc.html

prs505sc is the silver one (which looks cheap to me) and prs505lc for the black one

Ptui! Silver is for cappuccino machines. Gadgets should look like they mean it.

Make mine with Bakelite and bat toggles.

As expected, ABT has removed all pages related to PRS-505. But the cat is out of the bag...
