I have a Kindle, and I neither hide it nor show it off while reading in public. When I read, I disappear into my own little world (that's kinda the point, right?) Hence, external locus of control doesn't apply.

Not really, actually. This is mainly because when I'm reading, I tend to concentrate on that and as a result, I don't notice my surroundings enough to get self-conscious. It's my Mom that gets worried though, because I'm using an iPad, and she's always afraid that people will attack me to steal it, especially since we live in a poorer neighborhood.

My wife does that too! About the only time I get to use my Kindle is when I'm on a business trip.

I do like the idea of hollowing out a book so I don't have to read the airplane magazine while the plane is taxiing.

You have a devious mind.

Can I borrow it?

I carry a small/light paperback as a "takeoff, landing, and breakfast" book (I don't like the idea of leaving my reader on the table at breakfast buffets when traveling); moreover, if others can use phones at landing, I read my ebook.

Anybody having the same "problem" or it's just me?
Replace "Croatia" with "Vietnam" and you posted exactly what I think all the time. Sometimes I feel uneasy to use my device in public. People would look, they would ask what it is, they would want to know how much it costs, and they would say "hey it isn't a touch screen!".

"Duh. Leave me alone, will you?"

I had to go to the local clinic for fasting lab work yesterday and after that I read my Kindle while having some breakfast and a gentleman asked about my Kindle. He had never heard of the Kindle apparently and thought it was an ipad at first. He was also amazed that it was so cheaply priced.

I just slide my Kindle next to my hip and when I hear; "flight attendants prepare for takeoff" bring it back out

[QUOTE=Ivy;1523081
For example, I have a feeling people wish to be more successful than their neighbour in America. Or at least as successful. Where I live, people wish their neighbour was as unsuccessful as they were.
I know this is a generalisation, but I'm just trying to paint a picture of the society I live in.[/QUOTE]

Wow... that's really interesting. Instead of seeing something that they want and figuring out how they can elevate themselves to be able to have one as well, they wish to bring their neighbors down. That must come from being put down so many times, that they almost lose their ability to elevate themselves. Talk about killing vision and self-actualization.

I gather that you have a Macintosh.

With a PC, you'd need the liquor...

I had a Sony Reader before the vast majority here in Australia before it was sold here (or indeed any ebook readers).
I did get attention but it was never negative. It was a novelty, I got asked questions and people got excited about it.
I only was concerned about it getting damaged or stolen.
Now plenty of people have one or a similar looking device (such as the iPad), and questions/looks have passed away for the good part, although I occasionally get questions.
It has never made me feel like hiding it, but I wish my bag had a better pocket for protecting it during journeys.

I take the train every day and read. I almost never get a reaction about it (could be me though). Only rarely I encounter another reader in the wild, although the trains and trams are full. In my family though the readers have spread like wildfire after I got one. My wife, father, mother, sister, niece and uncle all got one.

It is the first thing I grab when I am going away to work or trip.
