May 8th -
On this day in 1956 John Osborne's first play, Look Back in Anger, opened at London's Royal Court Theatre. The press release for the play called the twenty-six-year-old Osborne "an angry young man," a phrase that would become a label for a generation. Critic Clive Barnes cites the opening night of Look Back in Anger as the "actual birthday...of modern British theatre." |

May 10th in literary history:
On this day in 1907 Kenneth Grahame wrote the first of a series of letters to his son, Alastair, describing the adventures of Toad, Rat, Mole and Badger which eventually became The Wind in the Willows. Grahame had been inventing such bedtime stories for several years; putting them on paper at this point was occasioned by his being separated from his son on his seventh birthday. |

11th May ....
According to a rumor that has circulated on the Internet for months, Raffaele Bendandi, an Italian pseudoscientist who died in 1979, predicted before his death that a massive earthquake will strike Rome on Wednesday (May 11). No one is sure that he actually made such a prediction — his chief biographer is unaware of such a prediction — but regardless, in response, Romans are taking heed and fleeing their city by the thousands.... 1934 - a massive storm sends millions of tonnes of topsoil flying from across the parched Great Plains region of the United States as far east as New York, Boston and Atlanta... 1904 - Birth of Salvador Dalí |

On this day in 2001 Douglas Adams died of a heart attack, aged forty-nine. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy and its sequels have sold fifteen million copies, and the Dirk Gently books have also done well, but Adams said that he was proudest of Last Chance to See, a documentary of his expeditions to observe a handful of near-extinct animal species.

Queen Elizabeth II enters the history books as Britain's second longest-reigning monarch. A reign of 59-years. Last month the Queen celebrated her 85th birthday. Next year she will reach her Diamond Jubilee, when it will be 60 years since she came to the throne. [Strictly speaking she is only the first Queen Elizabeth of the UK] |
