I was there with my 300 Baud modem too, and you're still wrong. The quoted definition is correct, trolling refers to any online community, as stated in the quote, not specifically forums.

is a troll.

I can't figure out why that is a troll, at least in the sense that it is correct.

Because it's not correct, by my logic anyway. The goat-door has left the equation--it's Casper... bologna without the mayo. What you are left with is 50-50 chance. Switching your choice at that point doesn't decrease or increase the odds.

You know what?

I think I just fell for the bait.

It depends on the assumptions you bring to the problem. If you assume that Monty knows what's behind each door, and that he therefore will always open a door with a goat behind it, you should switch.

But I agree that it's not really a trolling statement. But I'm also not going to spend any time critiquing the examples used in a usenet post by someone in 1994!

Thanks. And, I wasn't (meta)trolling -- I just thought it was a weird example (even taking into account it's ~17 years(!) out of context) and wanted to make sure I wasn't missing anything.

(It's pretty clear to me that it's 33/66% and better to switch once Monty opens the door, but that's a discussion for a different kind of forum.)

If Monty knows and always opens the goat door... that certainly changes things. I was assuming he opened a random door.

Anyway...

Yeah! what's up with the Kindle not supporting ePub??

Actually, 300 baud acoustic modems were in use when I first got online. And given that chats are still around and people are still trolling for virtual sex, the definition of troll is still the same. Nothing's changed as far as the definition of troll. It's not like the meaning as changed because it's no longer relevant. It's still as relevant today as it was then.

Now, the term we used for someone who came online to a BBS and attempted to disrupted it is WEENIE. And given that troll has to do with chats, I see no reason not to use weenie in place of the incorrect usage of troll.

The issue has more to do with what the moderators of this forum will allow. For instance, if I say "JSWolf is trolling", it will get by the moderators. If I say "JSWolf is a weenie", I'm going to get edited and reprimanded even if it's your preferred term. What's a person to do?

I know this is getting way off topic, but I need clarification. A 'troll stroll' referrs to someone being a pain in multiple forums- if I am to use your term 'weenie' instead, would they be referred to as 'taking a weenie walk'? or maybe a 'weenie waltz'? perhaps a 'weenie wander'? I really don't think I can type that with a straight keyboard!!

I'm new to this forum, but not to the internet. And certainly not to books and e-readers.

I bought my Kindle in November 2010, and really like it. It goes with me everywhere I can possibly take it.

When I was researching e-readers prior to my purchase, I was trying to decide between a Nook and a Kindle. I didn't even know Sony was making an e-reader, that's how little press it must get.

Looks like Sony may have another Betamax on its hands. I did see a Sony reader of some sort gathering dust at Best Buy, while Nooks and Kindles were hard to find in stock. I didn't catch the number, though, what would be the point?

With the few warts it does have, the Kindle is to me a homerun. I can live without ePub format, and even then Calibre converts almost everything you throw at it. DRM is one thing it won't touch from what I understand, but there are so many books out there no one person could possibly read them all in a lifetime.

I've heard and read good things about the Sony devices but their relatively higher prices make them less popular. So higher price and no 3g or wifi together make then even less popular.
