I don't think that that 10 Hz difference is going to make an important difference.

Well now I'm curious, do any of the tablets out there refresh at any speed other then 60Hz?

I think that I don't know what the difference would be. For me my LCD displaying at 60Hz is much better then a CRT at 60hz. And aren't the refresh rates of LCD kind of misleading anyway, it's not like CRT where the phosphor decays between refreshes?

FWIW, reading on an IPad bothers my eyes.

Kindle yet have to achieve the level of exclusivity of Apple products but it looks that Amazon wants to follow the footsteps of Apple/Soviets. It is exactly my 20+ years old Soviet experience that people have some money and they want to buy stuff but the vendor will not sell it to them. You would have either to be put on the waiting list or buy it in the black market.

I think Amazon only needs three things to establish the Kindle DX as a solid competitor.

1. improved firmware, especially a better PDF rendering engine

2. an SD card slot because the audience for a large format Kindle is people who do have a lot of PDF files and those are large files, that are easier to organize on external cards where you can sort by subject, author, case, etc.. Then the internal memory can be used for books you download from Amazon

3. thin like the iPad 2 and as light or lighter.

I think it would be smart for the next Kindle to be an updated DX.

I don't think she's trolling, just pointing out that you were wrong on all counts.
It was probably just a heads-up to those few newbies for whom this thread might be the first thing about Kindles they are seeing. There are dozens of well documented threads around here that have the correct information.

Wi-Fi is a part of Kindle's functionality, very important in the use of the device. You cannot read a book if you cannot get it into the device.

Nope, most people have no skills to use calibre or even remove DRM. In fact, commercial ebooks sold in Latvia cannot be stripped from DRM using the standards tools found on internet. There is additional level of security through obscurity (encoding related). At the same time these books can be easily loaded and read on every other e-ink reader I have known (Pocketbook, Kobo), except Kindle. Telling them to buy Kindle for this purpose, is irresponsible.

Indeed. And Amazon is facilitating them. Their lawyers along with many others irresponsibly support this outdated model.

Wi-fi is there "for convenience" but you can just as easily get books on a Kindle without it (download books to computer, transfer via USB)

It is a convenience for which I have paid my money. That's my whole point of my argument. It is a nice device that is artificially limited to discourage its use with non-Amazon books.

Thanks Amazon for <user>@free.kindle.com address but for pdf and mobi files it is unnecessary. It only adds to delay and file size limitations. It only allows Amazon to collect statistics of my reading habits.

The dx already has no competitor as far as being pretty much the only around with a large e-ink display. But yes they seriously need 1) because without good PDF support it's kind of hard to justify buying it, unless you have low vision and need the size. 2) would be nice. 3) isn't it already thinner and lighter than the iPad 2? I'd be shocked if not, since it doesn't need the large battery and doesn't have a large piece of glass in front and stiff metal body.

I have to say I never really could see the point of having wi-fi on it in the first place and would have been perfectly happy with a non wi-fi model if they had made one I don't find particularly limitating non-Amazon books because I don't use wi-fi at all on my Kindle, but I can see your point

so sorry about your bad luck and lack of attention to detail when exploring your Kindle purchase. I've traveled internationally with both the K1 and K2 (look ma! no wi-fi!) and had no problem getting my books.

why don't you become the Latvian ereading champion, set your post Socialist needs and reviews and let the rest of the world carry on with reality

the DX will never compete unless the price comes way down and the performance goes way up.

not too many people are going to shell out 300+ for it when full functioning tablets that size will soon be available for that price. I'm no iPad fan, but for 350 bucks you'd have to be crazy to buy a DX over a refurb iPad 1.

if they can be bothered to make it handle PDFs well and charge about 250 or under, it can retain its niche
