Meh. I can convert formats. AND, I can spell "feat."

I've read books I bought from the Kindle store on my Sony (though it did require conversion) and more to the point, I'm reading a Kindle book on my Nook Color at the moment: So I for one can certainly read both Nook and Kindle books on the same dedicated reader device.

I actually think "dedicated" is the wrong term, and that optimized would probably be better. While my NC was sold as a dedicated reader, now that it's been rooted it's more of a general purpose device, but the hardware is still optimized for reading, and it's certainly not a smartphone.

The key is that I can read all the same books on my NC that I can on my smartphone, but with a larger and easier to read screen. It's a better device for reading because that's what it was designed for.

My Droid is much better for a lot of other things, but my NC is a better reader.

I have an iPhone its great for reading news feeds and email but its nothing compared to a dedicated e-reader for books.

I have managed to acomplish a feat that if you have a dedicated reader you simply can not do. I can read kindle and nook books on the same device.

Sure - I can do the same on my iPad. But it's not really about being able to do that; after all, they sell pretty much the same books. It's a lot more about the quality of the reading experience, and that's why I prefer to read on my Kindle.

That's great! I'm sure every person who decides to get a dedicated reader knows this. I have both apps on my iPod Touch and I'm still looking to get an e-Reader. For me, I think the e-Reading experience will be better on an e-Reader. For you, this is not the case. That's ok. To each his own.

So what's this feat you've accomplished??? I'll check back for the answer when I've read a couple of Kindle, Nook etc books on my dedicated eReaders (not including a Kindle)... and I mean eReaders dedicated to reading not to an individual company and with decent screens show a good sized page of text...

What was this feat you've accomplished that you can't do with a dedicated reader???

Glad to see that a Sony PRS can do that as well, did not know that. I suspected that the Ipad could do that however I wanted to wait until an ipad owner told me it could.

This is great, if your eyes will focus close enough to your face. In practice my 40 year old eyes work best if a book is at least 12-18" away from my face; 2 feet is even better. In fact, unless one is near sighted, I expect most people don't necessarily prefer to hold their books 6" from their face.

Hey, for all you out there that prefer to read on smart phones and PDAs, that is great. Lets just remember that smart phones and PDAs can't offer the same reading experience that a dedicated e-Paper based reader can. Some of us, indeed, I would say many of us, prefer that experience. We might like having the books available to us on our smart phones in case we want to read when we don't have our book readers available, but when we settle in for an or two of reading, we will want our dedicated readers every time. You guys aren't wrong for your preference, but the rest of us would see the end of e-Paper based readers as a real loss.

I have always held my books around 6" from my eyes using glasses (I am near sighted). Now I am starting to get problem with focusing near my eyes but without glasses I can still focus at 3".

I thought that especially when you lie down and read that people had the book around 6" from the eyes.

Same here - I'm very short-sighted, and am writing this on my iPhone about 2" away from my eyes .

I just finished reading a Kindle book on my Nook Color earlier today.

Any Nook device is capable of reading books from the Sony store out of the box.

I can get any book I own on any of my three currently active devices, or the iPaq I have in the drawer. I could put them on my Palm if I replaced the screen (I can do it, I just don't feel the need to do when I have enough other devices).

Just about any book can be read on any device if one is willing to put in the effort - which ranges from trivial to significant.

For me, the fact that my 47-year-old eyes are more comfortable with a larger screen means that sticking to a smartphone for all my reading would be sub-optimal for me.

I also read comics on my device, and a 3.7" screen really isn't big enough for me to do that comfortably - and panel-by-panel view doesn't provide the same experience.
