My library is busier than ever, and I am using it more and more. I take out ebooks, and I reserved pbooks, mostly to complete series that are not available in ebook form. What has changed is I hardly ever go into the library. I used to drive or bike to the library to pick up the book I had reserved - now I sit in my pjs with a cup of coffee and retrieve my books! Very convenient, but not very social.

I like the idea of a centralized ebook depository available to all, but I worry about things like censorhip of such a system. Centralized planning requires someone to say this will be uploaded to our depository and this one will not.
Unless the system simply allows for all texts to be uploaded, ah so nice! I suppose a collaborative effort of users should be enough to stem the flow of garbage texts into the system. Some people like reading garbage texts so there has to be two layers to any central book depository, the first layer, the unfiltered layer, and then the second, filtered by anyone who chooses to donate a bit of their time to contribute to the filtering process. But what we currently call librarys will not need to store these texts? They will be stored on a server in a room somewhere. So the server is the library, the users, the filters will be the librarians! YAY FOR US! |

I don't think I would miss them much as I don't really go there much, but other people might some wouldn't want to spend the $150 plus for an E-reader, especially old people that wouldn't want to be bothered by learning to use a "complicated" device, I know that we don't find them complicated but allot of the older people I know (late 60's 70's 80's no offence to the older people who love ereading I know quit a few) aren't very computer literate, and find even find using windows or have trouble signing in and understanding their E-mail.
But in the near future maybe they would become unused. |

I visit mine once a week to borrow books and DVDs. They have thousands of videos.
Most of the books I borrow are through their inter-library loan system. Great way to share resources and save money. |

when I was younger I used the library primarily to find fiction novels but now I find myself using it to find expensive technical books and study guides. There are a lot of books about computer programming languages at my library.

I think there is room for a new type of environment that is a mix of library, book store, coffee shop, and coworking facility. This could be publicly funded, but more likely to come out of Starbucks, Borders, or Barnes and Nobles.

That sounds like Barnes and Nobles to me, don't they let you read ebooks now when you're in the store? But what do you mean by coworking facility? A meeting space for collaborative efforts?

[QUOTE=Namekuseijin;1400129]How social you can get in a place demanding silence?
![]() I really never saw any patrons I recognized, but I did have a nice relationship with the librarian. She asked after my daughter, and was very pleasant. Now, I never see her, except when I go in to pick up the books I had to reserve in pbook form. |
