That's like selling subscriptions to folks, but not delivering the magazine to them, but having them walk into Wal-Mart to take a magazine off the shelf.

Nothing nefarious about that.

But if you want to find inconsistency, merely point out that books are handled differently. Amazon and B&N (and others) are able to put a free reader in the App store -- and folks buy the books via the respective websites. And that's ok with apple.

I wonder at the definition Apple has that distinguishes the book practice from the magazine practice.

I have the free Olive Tree bible software on my iPad. If I buy from within the app, Apple gets their cut. If I go to Olive Tree's website and buy a book (the reader software is free, but you buy the bibles and books that the reader works with) -- Apple doesn't get a cut. And there are discounts on the web site that aren't available via the in-app purchase. Again, I wonder at Apple's definitions.

Apple delivers the app for free. The customer pays the company outside of the app environment.

That's because the company can't deliver the app.

Like I said, different ingredients, same cake. If I want to play with Amazon, I have to pay Amazon. Apple is saying the same thing.
