I want to try the SD card thing (I already use Ubuntu) but I can't find the image. I'll report back.
Edit: Unbricked using 1.4 SD card image! Will give it some time to charge (in case that had something to do with it) and have another crack at the 1.8 upgrade. If it works I'll explain exactly what I did here. Last edited by Vzzzbx; 02-03-2011 at 06:06 PM. |

Nope, failed again. This really is unacceptable.
Can anyone please tell me where I can find a 1.8.x Borders image? Last edited by Vzzzbx; 02-03-2011 at 06:49 PM. |

I seem to remember from a thread on the WiFi version that there was a writable data file on the Kobo that contained the info. about what store to use, and that this file was in fact updated every time that the Kobo Desktop application was used.
(Thread was https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=113151) The file in question was \.kobo\Kobo\Kobo eReader.conf If you were up to trying an experiment, take a look at this file (if it exists), then try a sync with the Borders desktop application, and then look at the file again. |

Ah cool, thanks.
PeterT: I'm exhausted after this morning's ordeal, and frankly I'm scared it'll break again. Maybe another time when I'm in a very good mood. |

What went wrong?
Maybe you could recall exact steps you took. If it starts to do something, I presume you got file system fine. Just be aware how previous version (1.4) should be unpacked and copied in one step, to avoid intermedium read/write problem. |

From 1.4:
- plugged it into the Mac - started Borders app - it offered to upgrade the reader - upgrade claimed to be successful but the reader was bricked First time I held menu and on/off; second time I held menu, centre D-pad and on/off. Both times the device was bricked. |

Maybe to try once more with it? |

When I got it to work successfully (post #78), it was with the 1.8.1 SD card image. Sorry, I should have explained that.

I can't upgrade either. I have version 1.7.4. I have tried all the suggestions given above to no avail. I'm using Win7 and have re-installed the Desktop application. At first when I press CTL-Shift-U there is some activity on my modem but only for a few seconds, enough for about 1MB at most.

Now that it all works I'm very pleased with the update. Faster response times, indefinite sleep mode etc etc. Doubt I'll ever update it again though.

Did the 1.8.3 upgrade this morning, and my books purchased from Border.au are locked.
Really, speaking as someone who designs, develops, tests and installs software for a living, this is just not good enough. Go back to the v1.0 software and start all over again, this time, test the bloody software before releasing it. (original kobo) |
