Yikes, now that looks more confusing. I am going to try bypassing that file download to see what happens.

Let us know how it works for you.

You're not alone, April. I find it all confusing, too, and I've got a 2-month old Vista PC. I've been waiting for someone to come out with definite, clear instructions for installing BD, and I'll watch this thread with great interest.

In the meantime, I transfer files back and forth to and from my old XP PC.

I guess what bugs me is downloading that file from microsoft and installing it. Like I said, maybe after I get used to vista. But installing a file like that, I sure wouldn't want something to go bonkers after the fact. I have been having enough computer problems the past year......

Good luck with the install.

It probably is if you know your way around computers, and feel confident that you can get yourself out of trouble if you find yourself in it. I've already had my control panel inexplicably disappear and don't want to go through anything like that again if I can help it.

Ok, I just installed Vista using ChrisI's steps mentioned above & tested it. Everything works perfectly!

Here's exactly what I did (with Word 2007 already installed)...

1. Download and install the Microsoft DHTML Editing Control.

2. Download and install BookDesigner Installer & BookDesigner Update from http://www.bookdesigner.org

3. Browse to C:\Program Files\ and right-click on the Book Designer 4.0 folder. Select Properties. Go to the Security tab. Select Edit, select your user-id. Grant yourself full access to the directory (check the boxes under allow).

4. Create the folder "Sony Reader", and "LastFile" in the Book Designer 4.0 folder.

5. Open a Command Prompt, as Administrator. (Right-click on the menu item and select run as administrator.) Go to the Book Designer 4.0 directory, and run the following command: regsvr32 GflAx.dll. This dll was copied to the BD by the update, and needs to be registered to get graphics (such as browse for a cover page) to work properly.

I understand, but the DHTML Editing Control is needed according to my personal experience as well as according to http://www.bookdesigner.org

Brian, when you make the Sony Reader and Last File (and presumably Palm, too, if you're making something for a Kindle to read), will BD automatically save the appropriate document to these folders or do you need to direct it to do that in some way?

Once the folders are there BD saves the file there automatically. The folders are created automatically in XP, but for some reason not is Vista.

Step 2 is only partly correct. The problem is that the update is incomplete and unless you've gone through the 4.0 install and then ALL the other updates as they came out, you'll have problems. What you can do however to easily solve this problem is go to https://www.mobileread.com/forums/showthread.php?p=78249 and download the update in the first message which is complete. I made sure it was. Now once you use it to update, it'll be a complete update.

The reason you need step 4 is because you've installed Book Designer in Program Files which is a no-no (according to others) because Book Designer writes to it's own directory in a way that is not correct for Vista. Best to install under the root of C: instead.

I've used the update from the Book Designer site for my last two installs without any problems. What kinds of problems are folks having?

Okay I installed Bookdesigner and it's working for me..........
Created a folder other than the default, so I made it c:/Bookdesigner
I unzipped the .msi file into that folder
Right clicked to install .msi file
After it was installed and the icons were sitting on my desktop I unzipped and extracted all files from that most recent update into that folder.

Then I double clicked to start the program, I had always gotten a weird message about an update and it will do so and so, it never made sense to me but I clicked okay, didn't have any choice, it did it's thing....... loaded up with a test book. It had the sony setup there. Loaded up a book from my books and told it to Make a book, made all 600 and whatever pages worth........

I have AUC or whatever the heck that thing is ON!

I didn't download any special files from microsoft......... I did get this new puter yesterday and I did get all the microsoft updates....

I just ran another through before I clicked post.........
It is working for me guys and gals. Did nothing special, just didn't put it in the directory it wanted to go......

April. Which copy of BD did you use - the one available from Mobileread or from the Book Designer website?

Oh, and does your version of Vista include the new SP1?

My copies came from here. They were ones I had saved from long ago when I had xp

Bookdesigner40.zip and I used the one upgrade Bookdesigner2007-07-30.zip
I have no idea if I have sp1 on here, how do I find out? like I said, I just went up and got all the updates from microsoft yesterday whatever they were. took about 13 minutes or so I believe. If there is a place to see about this, I can go look, but right now I don't know where to look.
