W00t!

Too bad you can't speed up the process enough to get the violin before your next round of auditions, though.

Congrats! That's fantastic news. You don't have to wait years for one, and you know this one is good. In fact, from what you've said, I think it sounds like a special instrument. You've already done the legwork, found an exceptional one, so... how could you NOT buy this one!!!???

well, all is not secure yet...the violin maker could pull another stunt like this one and then I'll be back where I started, but then he'd really be pushing it...and I hope he won't do that...or I'll have to get VERY angry and post unfriendly things about him on some violin-related forums...

Yup! don't sell the skin till the bear's dead.

Then you'll have to pay this violin for the rest of your life.

Okay, now that this is almost settled, where are you going to play it is the next question???

Hmmm! Dresden! That's in the former eastern block is it?
Where is your family from?

I spent three years in Soest as a kid, that's in Westphalia. Dad was in the Canadian army.

It's in the former eastern bock...yes...can't be helped...^^

My family is from Bavaria (Mother) and Niedersachsen (Father).
I myself was born in Capetown, South Africa, because my Father had a job in the Capetown Opera House. They held an audition in Germany for the job in South Africa...many german musicians went to Capetown when they opened the Opera House there...my parents were in Africa for 20 years.
I actually spent my first 9 years in South Africa and Namibia. But despite my exotic place-of-birth my origins are completely boring...German as back as anyone could find out...^^

WOOHOOOO!!!!!! You're the proud owner of a masterpiece by a master violin maker, and not only that, but you got one of his best creations! Not a bad way to start out a career!!!!!! Congratulations.

So has the stork already come with your new baby? And you'll have to let us know how the transition goes -- in terms of how easy or hard it is to get comfortable on this instrument and when you feel as comfortable on it as your old one!

Well, I won't be getting the instrument until the 22nd of May. I know that before because he is presenting it at an exhibition in May.
Getting used to it is always an issue...I'm still not quite comfortable with the one I rented as interim...I've been playing it for over 2 weeks now...intonation (perfect pitch) is one of the main issues because the "colour" of the sound makes a big difference to the perception of pitch.
I'm getting along quite well with the interim instrument by now, but I'm not feeling quite as "at home" yet as I did with mine...

When you tried that violin you fancy, did you feel comfortable with it or did you buy it on recommendation from your teacher?

Years ago, when I had all fingers intact, I searched for the perfect guitar a long time. When I found it, I knew it was her! Did you get such an unrational feeling?

@yvanleterrible

It was kind of like that, but not only. At very first "touch" the instrument did not fell as comfortable as the other one from that maker...but when I heard my teacher playing it, I was pretty much decided already. When I then tried it again I had the kind of "feeling" you talk about...but I'm most certainly not going to base my decision on feelings alone...

Once I get the instrument I'll do a very thorough test-series with it and will try to figure out as precisely as possible what it can and can't do. I won't take any measurements or stuff like that, I'll just play it and listen to it in different acoustics because that's the most important thing of all.
A violin can sound like crap near the ear and be wonderful at a distance (which is what counts) or it can be the other way round...which is not good.
I would not like to play a violin that sounds like crap up close, but I'll most certainly not make the error of judging an instrument by the way it sounds near the ear...^^
