heheh, i know just what you mean. someone recently sent me a link to something on a different person's facebook page (which i couldn't see, of course ) and i discovered looking through their friends list that (nominally, at least) they are still in contact with practically everyone we were ever at school with ! which is far from my case, by choice. since i also definitely don't want to "relive" however superficially what was not a very happy time of my life i scrupulously avoided leaving any trace of my passage. sometimes online networks can be quite dangerous...

You know, if someone sends you a friend request you can just refuse/block it and they can't see or communicate with you.

Also, if you go to the privacy settings in Facebook, you can select an option that only your friends can find you in a search or see you listed on one of your friend's pages. That way you can be on Facebook and stay in contact with who you choose to but still be invisible to everyone else.

I recently deleted mine. I suddenly realised that being part of a social network when I'm a chronic introvert (or, at least, very selective and minimalist in my socialising) is about one of the stupidest things I can do. Likewise, "old friends" (school, etc.) are usually just "old pain" for me.

I can see how fabulous Facebook and other such sites are for those more gregarious than myself, but, I'm okay, and quite happy with MR and a couple of other sites being the only portals into and out of my social sphere (oh, that, and that often annoying distraction, "real life").

We're glad you are. And remember, there's no way out of here. We've just bought some new padlocks, to keep MobileRead's doors locked
